About the Role

The special education teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in various educational settings under the direction of the Director of Special Education and school principal. This role involves creating a flexible program and learning environment that offers specialized instruction, enabling students with disabilities to benefit from the general education curriculum with supplemental aides, accommodations, interventions, and other supports.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment.
• Employ special educational strategies and techniques to improve sensory and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
• Instruct students in academic subjects using techniques such as phonetics, multi-sensory learning, and repetition to meet varying needs and interests.
• Teach socially acceptable behavior as outlined in students’ individualized education programs (IEPs) using positive behavioral support systems.
• Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities using a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.
• Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time, providing opportunities for observation, questioning, and investigation.
• Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures to maintain a conducive learning environment.
• Meet with parents to discuss progress, priorities, and individualized educational needs.
• Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop high-quality IEPs promoting students' educational, physical, and social/emotional development.
• Assess students on an ongoing basis using formal and informal methods.
• Develop and write IEPs of the highest quality for students.
• Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.
• Establish clear learning objectives for lessons, units, and projects, and communicate them to students.
• Develop plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow-up of students in inclusive classroom settings.
• Provide crisis intervention for students and those in inclusive classrooms as needed.
• Assist in collecting data for appropriate classroom interventions.
• Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
• Assist in preparing data for local, state, and federal reports.
• Maintain professional competence through staff development activities, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities.
• Perform related work as required.
