About the role
The job of Teacher - Special Education is designed to support the instructional process by providing specialized teaching to students with specific needs, focusing on academic, social, and life skills.
Responsibilities
- Ensures classroom work aligns with individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
- Administers developmental testing and subject-specific assessments to assess student competency levels and develop individual learning plans.
- Administers first aid and provides assistance to medically fragile children, such as tube feeding, toileting, and diapering.
- Communicates with parents and guardians about student progress, including achievements, identified IEP goals, and methods for improvement.
- Affirms student progress towards objectives, expectations, and goals, particularly IEP goals related to behavioral, motor development, communication skills, academic needs, vocational abilities, etc.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community stakeholders to enhance overall student outcomes and achieve classroom objectives.
- Counsels students to improve performance, general wellbeing, problem-solving techniques, and personal issues.
- Demonstrates methods and classroom assignments necessary to provide an effective program addressing individual student IEP goals.
- Guides assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers to ensure an effective classroom program and meet individual student needs.
- Instructs students to improve their academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
- Manages student behavior by completing Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs), implementing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), and monitoring progress.
- Maintains a safe and positive learning environment by supervising students in various educational settings, including classrooms, playgrounds, field trips, nap times, etc.
- Participates in meetings to convey and gather information necessary to perform job functions.
- Prepares written materials such as grades, attendance records, anecdotal notes, etc., to document student progress through IEP goals and meet mandated requirements.
- Reports suspected child or substance abuse to the assigned site administrator to maintain students' personal safety and adhere to regulatory requirements.
- Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Responds to inquiries from various sources, including other teachers, parents, administrators, etc., to resolve issues, provide information, and/or direction.
- Collaborates with classroom teachers to implement individualized education plans.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education.
- Georgia certification in Special Education.
