About the role
The Special Education Assistant II provides support to the instructional program with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs. This position involves assisting in the implementation of plans for instruction, monitoring student behavior, documenting activities and progress, and supporting students' IEP goals.
Responsibilities
- Develops and maintains a pleasant and orderly classroom environment.
- Aids in the completion of learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers.
- Learns and facilitates teaching of individuals in 1:1, small group, or whole class instruction.
- Maintains student training data according to prescribed procedures.
- Supports students in following routines, directions, schedules, and completing tasks.
- Assists with data collection and analysis, communicates with special education teacher regarding further needs, and ensures behavior interventions are practiced with fidelity.
- Provides support for equitable opportunities for students with challenging behaviors, maintains interventions with existing supports, and streamlines the shift of responsibility to the school staff.
- Assists with the maintenance of students' records, collection of lunch monies, and related instructional activities as directed.
- Maintains a notebook containing weekly behavior logs, progress notes on behavior intervention plans, social skills lesson plans, incident reports, and log of communication with school staff, family, and outside agencies.
- Supports students with daily living skills, assists with deregulated students, participates in team meetings, assists with medical-related duties, and coordinates with specialists and school staff to implement behavior curriculum.
- Supervises and trains students in the lunchroom or during lunch period, supervises and trains students during free time and other non-instructional periods as directed by the classroom teacher.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or principal.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Willingness to seek and maintain CPR certification.
Qualifications
- Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled/handicapped students.
- Willingness to learn specialized instructional/management techniques employed with disabled/handicapped students.
- Ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff.
Skills
- Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
