About the role

The Special Education Assistant I position at Mountain View Upper Elementary School is part of a school division dedicated to providing engaging, equitable learning experiences for all students. The division aims to eliminate racial and socioeconomic disparities in student success through comprehensive educational programs and community partnerships.

Responsibilities

  • Carries out instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher and IEP
  • Carrries out follow-up and review lessons
  • Develops and maintains a pleasant and orderly classroom environment
  • Aids in maintaining classroom behavior and control
  • Carries out appropriate discipline of students
  • Procures, sets up, and operates audio-visual equipment
  • Aids in the completion of learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers
  • Aids in related instructional activities
  • Assists in physical movement of students
  • Performs clerical duties as directed
  • Supervises students in lunchroom or during lunch period
  • Supervises students during free time and other non-instructional periods
  • Assists in maintenance of students' records
  • May assist students with daily living skills
  • Participates in team meetings
  • Assists with carry-over of related services

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Basic keyboard and filing training
  • Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward disabled students
  • Willingness to learn specialized instructional/management techniques
  • Ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of special education principles and practices
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
