Special Education Adapted Physical Education (APE) Teacher - Special Education Department - 2026-27 School Year
About the role
The Special Education Adapted Physical Education (APE) Teacher will teach students with special education designations such as Specific Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbance, Other Health Impaired (ADHD), and high-functioning Autism. This role requires a positive learning environment, collaboration with general education teachers, and the ability to manage student behavior.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct instructional services using evidence-based practices in various settings
- Achieve desired goals, objectives, and outcomes for students as outlined in their Individual Education Programs (IEPs)
- Assess student abilities and promote positive behavior in instructional settings
- Collaborate with general education teachers to assess program effectiveness, recommend instructional strategies, and ensure implementation of required accommodations and modifications
- Plan, integrate, and utilize assistive technology for classroom instruction
- Communicate accommodations required by the student's IEP to essential teachers and paraprofessionals
- Communicate regularly with parents of caseload students via email and phone
- Participate in staff, department, and school-wide committee meetings and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
- Supervise assignments for paraprofessionals and other volunteers
- Adhere to and demonstrate knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing special education services
Requirements
Candidates must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching certificate with endorsement in School Counseling. More information can be found on the VDOE website.

- Necessary principles and application of theory into practice for effective instruction and positive behavioral supports
- ACPS curriculum and instructional techniques
- Human behavior, development, and skill performance
- Individual differences in ability, personality, and interests
- Learning and motivation
- The assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders
- ACPS policies and effective instructional practices
Skills
The special educator should demonstrate the ability to:
- Provide positive behavioral support to students in a group and in an individual setting
- Work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school-based staff, students, parents, and community members
- Communicate effectively in written and verbal forms
- Respond to the unique educational needs of students with disabilities in a stressful setting
- Manage aggressive and self-abusive students, angry students, emotional students, students with infectious diseases, and personal physical abuse
