Pay

• $268 per student/school day

About the role

A School-Based Permanent Substitute reports to the same school every school day and is placed by the school principal or designee in a classroom or role where there is an unfilled absence of a professional educator. The substitute works the regular hours of the absent classroom teacher during their absence.

Responsibilities

• Teaches content and skills in subject area by following lesson plans provided by the absent professional educator
• Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment
• Understands student needs based on lesson plans and cooperates with other professional staff to ensure students are cared for throughout the school day
• Supervises students in assigned out-of-classroom activities during the working day
• Participates in faculty meetings and other student activities when requested within the typical work day
• Models nondiscriminatory and inclusionary practices in all activities
• Creates a classroom conducive to learning, appropriate to the maturity and interests of students
• Maintains established routines of the school and classroom procedures
• Maintains a professional appearance as an example to students
• Meets and instructs assigned classes in the designated locations and times
• Performs any other related duties as assigned by the principal or appropriate administrator

Requirements

• Minimum Associate's degree and completion of district-provided substitute training
• Current or eligible for a Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction teaching license
• Completion of a physical examination as required by Wisconsin Statute 118.25

Skills

• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, peers, administrators, parents, and the public
• Basic mathematical skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, computation of rate, ratio, percent, and interpretation of bar graphs
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and handle abstract and concrete variables
• Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs
• Ability to plan and implement lessons based on building/district goals and student needs/abilities
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, parents, administrators, and the community
• Clear and concise communication skills
• Basic proficiency in email, word processing, and spreadsheet software
• Ability to direct others, maintain flexibility, and foster a positive environment for students and staff

Physical Attributes

• Regularly required to use hands, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear
• Frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
• Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, lift, and/or move up to 50 pounds
• Directly responsible for the safety, well-being, or work output of others
• Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
• Ability to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and staff
