Job Overview
Central Supply Technicians, or Sterile Processing Technicians, ensure healthcare safety by managing, sterilizing, and distributing medical instruments and supplies. Operating under strict infection control protocols, they use meticulous attention to detail and advanced sterilization techniques to prevent pathogen transmission. They also manage inventory to ensure surgical teams have timely access to tools, directly improving patient outcomes and hospital efficiency.
Qualifications
Required:
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- A High School Diploma or Equivalent
Certifications and Licenses Required:
- Certification: CRCST
- PREFERRED: Certifications: CER or CFER
Qualities
Knowledge of sterile technique: A thorough understanding of sterile technique as it applies to handling and processing instruments and supplies
Product knowledge: Knowledge of surgical instruments and medical supplies
Communication: Ability to communicate with fellow technicians and medical staff
Organization: Strong organizational skills for managing inventory and supplies
Basic math: Ability to perform basic calculations for inventory purposes
Computer skills: Knowledge of inventory and tracking software, and standard office programs

Essential Functions
Collecting used and contaminated equipment, instruments, and supplies for sorting and decontamination
Manually cleaning supplies of contaminants, removing waste matter, and operating and maintaining decontamination equipment
Preparing and packing decontaminated supplies for sterilization
Making sure sterilization equipment is monitored and operated
Examining supplies meticulously to ensure they are properly cleaned and sanitized
Testing and reporting any issues or problems with the sterilization equipment
Preparing and delivering all necessary equipment and instruments for surgeries, examinations, medical procedures, and medical carts
Maintaining records of sterilization procedures, sterilized items, equipment maintenance, and supplies
Controlling inventory, reordering supplies, and checking expiration dates
Delivering and distributing supplies and equipment to various departments and patient care areas, which may include stocking par-level carts
Knowledge of crash carts, being able to replenish and understand the different disposable items
