SPD Tech III
About the role
The SPD Tech III position at California Hospital Medical Center is responsible for ensuring that soiled instrumentation or equipment is decontaminated, distributing equipment in proper working order, assembling surgical items, and performing the surgical case setup process. The role requires a strong understanding of sterilization processes and proficiency in various surgical setup tasks.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate an independent function in ensuring that soiled instrumentation or equipment delivered to the department is decontaminated in a manner that prevents cross contamination.
- Demonstrate an independent function in ensuring that the equipment distributed from the Sterile Processing Department is in appropriate working order for utilization in direct patient care.
- Demonstrate independent function in ensuring a sterile product by professional assembly of surgical items, instrument sets, floor trays and appropriate packaging in preparation for terminal sterilization.
- Demonstrate independent function in ensuring that sterility is achieved utilizing the sterilization process either steam, and sterrad. Demonstrate when to use each process.
- Demonstrate independent function in performing in the following areas of the surgical case setup process: Assembly/Packaging/Wrapping - Orthopedics; Assembly/Packaging/Wrapping - ENT/Plastic/Ophthalmology; Assembly/Packaging/Wrapping - General Surgery; Assembly/Packaging/Wrapping - GYN/GU/Cardiothoracic; Assembly/Packaging/Wrapping - Neuro/Vascular.
Requirements
- Fire Safety, within 90 Days
- High School Graduate or GED
- Three or more years Sterile Processing knowledge of surgical instrumentation. To perform successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
- Certified and Registered Central Service Technician or Certified Sterile Processing and Dist Supervisor or Certified Sterile Processing and Dist Tech, upon hire
Qualifications
Qualified candidates should possess a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. This includes a minimum of three years of sterile processing knowledge of surgical instrumentation and the ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Skills
Strong skills in sterilization processes, surgical item assembly, and the ability to work independently are required. Proficiency in multiple surgical setup tasks is also essential.

Pay
The posted compensation range for this position is $25.00 - $30.39 /hour, reflecting the reasonable estimate of what CommonSpirit Health believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting. CommonSpirit Health reserves the right to pay more or less than the posted range as permitted by law.
Schedule
The SPD Tech III works an evening shift, typically from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM, with days varying and requiring weekend coverage.
