Space Systems Avionics and Software Integration Engineer

This engineer will support the Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) as Discipline Lead Engineer for integrated avionics systems engineering (hardware and software) and lead MAV program coordination within the MSFC Engineering Directorate (ED) Space Systems Department (SSD).

Responsibilities

• Coordinate scheduling and meetings.
• Track action items.
• Direct planning activities and trade studies.
• Perform systems analyses.
• Support integrated hardware and software design solutions, evaluation, and testing.
• Make technical risk management assessments.
• Coordinate technical performance measures.
• Support and coordinate reviews, working groups, and boards.
• Provide periodic status inputs to project and management.
• Provide engineering insight of the MAV integrated avionics in support of vendor avionics development.
• Draw upon all necessary government and contractor organizations supporting SSD and the MAV Program.
• Lead an Integrated Avionics team with members from multiple NASA centers.
• Manage workforce allocation in support of the MAV program.
• Lead weekly technical team meetings to coordinate tasks and status with all engineering subsystems and report out to MAV integrated avionics stakeholders (SE&I, S&MA, SVS Office, etc.).
• Provide monthly project status to ES Management (Department, Division, and Branches) regarding technical accomplishments, issues, upcoming tasks, ODC expenditures, and workforce actuals versus plan.
• Support Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs) for aspects of MAV/Orion integrated avionics and software such as docking and ionizing radiation issues.
• Support monthly tag-up with MAV management to address workforce allocation, performance, and issues.
• Develop/Update MAV Avionics Insight plan and present to MAV Program office as required.
• Coordinate actions with the MAV Insight Team.
• Travel periodically to support avionics reviews and other activities.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Must have a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited institution with at least 20 years of experience in avionics or software engineering. Education may be considered in lieu of experience with the following requirements: a Master's Degree and at least 18 years of experience or a Ph.D. with at least 14 years of applicable experience.
• Must have problem identification and solutions utilizing experience/skills in management, engineering design integration across multiple disciplines, trade studies, requirements, milestone reviews, interface definition, change management, risk management, manufacturing, assembly, test, safety, logistics, and quality.
• Candidate must have the ability to review avionics products and provide relevant feedback, have excellent coordination and communication skills, be pro-active, be able to multi-task, and accomplish tasks with minimal supervision. Interpersonal and technical management skills are required.

Qualifications

• Prior experience with Space Systems avionics and software is desired.
• Hands-on experience with avionics and/or electronic systems throughout the project life cycle is preferred.
