About the role
Entarian is seeking a Fisheries Biologist to support the NOAA NMFS Fisheries Statistics Division (FSD) Southeast Region Head Boat Survey (SRHS). The role involves gathering data directly from fishery participants through fisheries dependent activities and collaborating with state, commission, and federal partners across the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, southeastern Atlantic, and Caribbean regions.
Responsibilities
- Provides administrative support to manage and analyze fishery dependent data from the recreational head boat fishery in the Southeastern United States from North Carolina to Texas.
- Manages, organizes, and maintains SRHS and NMFS databases to ensure proper functioning, data quality, and error corrections.
- Laboratory Support: Performs QA\QC and analysis of biological samples collected during sampling operations, including otolith and spine collections, and processes in the Oracle system.
- Data Management Support: Uses custom data entry applications and database software such as, Microsoft Excel, Oracle and Access to summarize data and provide results.
- Organizes, and maintains bioprofile, logbook catch record, and head boat activity report databases.
- Compiles dockside sampling data from head boat port agents in the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.
- Maintains and develops quality assurance and quality control analyses and procedures on Head boat Survey data.

- Tracks vessel reporting compliance.
- Analytical Support: Utilize SAS and/or R analytical software, Oracle and relational databases to summarize landings and effort estimates, data QA/QC, compliance monitoring and analysis of sensitive data.
- Performs and assists with various data analyses in support of data requests and general scientific inquiries.
- Performs data summaries and analyses in support of SEDAR activities.
- Compiles and maintains vessel directory and contact information.
- Writes scientific proposals to compete for extramural funding.
- Reviews reports, manuscripts and scientific proposals.
Requirements
- MS Degree in Marine Science or a related field of study or BS Degree in Marine Science or a related field of study plus three (3) years of relevant experience.
- Knowledge of applying basic concepts, principles and methodologies of data management and analysis of fishery data.
- Experienced and proficient in advanced database software such as SAS, R, Oracle and Access to summarize data, perform statistical analysis and provide results in presentation or report form.
- Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.

- Experience managing and analyzing catch and effort information from recreational fishermen.

$60,000 - 65,000/year.
