About the role
This position is expected to work out of our office at 653 Charles St. in San Jose. Limited job-related travel may be required. The Sorter provides support to one or more facilities by sorting a variety of material that ranges from recyclables to trash in order to minimize contamination and maintain high recyclable rates.
Responsibilities
- Properly follow company and OSHA safety procedures to ensure safety.
- Extract at least 48 items per minute to maximize the recycling potential.
- Follow directions, daily procedures, and protocols.
- Work near others while sorting material from either side of the conveyor belt to increase productivity.
- Stand and collect material for extended periods of time in front of a conveyor belt, using both hands with good manual dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
Requirements
- Ability to distinguish between commodities with ease to separate material properly.
- Reliable transportation, punctuality, and dependability to minimize disruptions to day-to-day operations.
- Ability to work as a team and collaborate well with others.
- Proficiency in English and/or Spanish.
Physical Demands
- Handle material weighing up to 50 lbs. to prevent sort line pile-ups.
- Constant pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, and grasping material to prevent it from ending up in the wrong commodity container.
- Go up and down stairs to reach certain workstations.
Work Environment
- Fast-paced environment with exposure to loud noises, heat, cold, sharp objects, and odors.
- Mandatory use of a hard hat, safety glasses, work boots, safety vests, and gloves at all times.
- Work shifts vary; regular workday may range from 4-12 hours depending on daily tonnage.
- Working overtime is required.
Pay
$22.50 to $25.00 per hour.
