Selective candidates may be eligible for a sign-on bonus up to $10,000. A moving allowance may also be available. Current University of Iowa employees are not eligible.

About the Role

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Radiology is seeking a Sonographer or Senior Sonographer to perform advanced ultrasound procedures across multiple specialty areas. This role involves working under limited supervision, utilizing state-of-the-art imaging technology, educating patients about examination procedures, monitoring patient well-being during exams, and serving as a resource for students and staff by providing instruction on ultrasound techniques and equipment operation.

Responsibilities

  • Performs complex diagnostic ultrasonography procedures including imaging and Doppler
  • Provides instruction to trainees, students, and other medical staff on operation and safety precautions
  • Consults with the interpreting physician regarding ultrasound exam findings
  • Documents exam information as required by departmental standards
  • Evaluates images of ultrasound exams and determines if the exam is of diagnostic quality
  • Assists with and provides ultrasound guidance for intraoperative and invasive procedures
  • Provides information and instructions to patients, patient’s family, or others regarding diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures
  • Performs patient care techniques including skin preparation, vital sign monitoring and recording, and basic life support; prepares and administers contrast material to patients
  • Maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public
  • Instructs and evaluates sonography students on the operation of diagnostic equipment
  • Instructs medical residents on operation of diagnostic equipment
  • Maintains quality control within the ultrasound section in accordance with accepted departmental standards
  • Determines equipment malfunctions and contacts repair service
  • Performs equipment calibration and sterilization as prescribed by standard accepted methods of operation

Schedule

  • 1st Shift; Saturday and Sunday; 0800-2000
  • 1st Shift; Monday through Friday; 0800-1600
  • 2nd Shift; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday; 1000-2000

This is a full-time, 100% position located in Iowa City, Iowa.

Requirements

Consideration for the Sonographer position requires one of the following:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Radiologic Technology or other Allied Health Sciences discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Completion of a CAAHEP accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, or Vascular Technology
  • Completion of a two-year or more accredited health science program (e.g., Radiologic Technology, Medical Technology, Nursing) plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography

Qualifications for Senior Sonographer

  • A Bachelor's degree in Radiation Sciences or other Allied Health Sciences discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Extensive (3-5 years) progressively responsible experience in diagnostic medical sonography or vascular sonography
  • Experience providing clinical education to students, sonographers, and residents

Skills

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Certification Requirements

  • Requires registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers within nine (9) months following the start of employment
  • Requires registration in Abdomen

Desirable Qualifications

  • Registration in Vascular and OB/GYN specialty areas
