About the role

As part of the RBC Bank Architecture team, a Solutions Architect evaluates, creates, and improves solutions for all product categories in the bank and plays a key role in technology management and architectural governance across the organization. In addition to designing solutions, you will establish best practices, lead successful implementations, and be a key partner to business throughout the entire lifecycle of product development. The role coordinates, develops, leads, communicates, and executes activities to ensure objectives are accomplished on time.

Responsibilities

  • Design large or complex solutions, including system and application architecture, in accordance with industry best practices, RBC standards, and strategies.
  • Create end-to-end application enterprise architectures that are secure, extensible, available, performant, scalable, and compliant with RBC standards and industry best practices.
  • Identify weaknesses in or further optimize existing architectures and design improvements based on the principles above.
  • Identify and apply tooling to measure these attributes, develop and monitor KPIs and KRIs around them.
  • Take each solution through RBC’s solution governance process from inception to completion, including:
    • Documenting current and new architectures.
    • Proposing alternate solutions to mitigate gaps and risks, and logging Architectural Decisions (ADs).
    • Using expertise to vote on the best solution.
  • Mentor development teams in best practices, including hands-on development of Proof of Concepts to demonstrate architectural patterns.
  • Manage implementation of large complex initiatives, plan technical development activities, and communicate risks.
  • Stay on top of industry trends and apply best practices in front-end, back-end, platform, and data architecture.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience developing RESTful APIs and SOAP web services using Java or .NET-based microservice architectures on cloud-native platforms like OpenShift and Cloud Foundry.
  • Complete familiarity with modern distributed computing concepts and their application in IaaS/PaaS solutions from Azure and AWS, including:
    • Containers
    • Serverless
    • Service meshes
    • Immutable architectures
    • Declarative APIs
  • Strong understanding of application security best practices, including:
    • Encryption for storage and transmission (APIs)
    • IAM concepts like SSO and federation
    • Token and certificate management
  • Extensive experience with database development using SQL Server, MySQL, or Oracle.
  • Thorough understanding of RDBMS design principles and writing queries.
  • Thorough understanding of web-based application architecture, including web servers, firewalls, CDNs, application frameworks, and interoperability.

Nice to have

  • Experience with low-code platforms and ecosystems like Salesforce, OutSystems, Power, and Blue Prism.
  • Experience with message bus/queuing architectures like MQ and Kafka.
  • Strong proficiency with front-end technologies like Angular, React, HTML5, and CSS3, including:
    • Knowledge of accessibility standards like WCAG 2.0 and implementing to the standards.
    • Experience implementing internationalization and localization standards (i18n, l10n).
  • Experience with NoSQL databases.
