Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Assist as helper on knuckle boom or rear load garbage truck and loose-leaf collection using vacuum leaf machine.
- Deliver and repair roll out carts; collect dead animals and clean downtown area/parking deck: empty garbage cans, collect litter, vacuum curb line.
- Repair or assemble carts, deliver door hangers, retrieve carts, and other misc. assignments.
- Collects solid waste on assigned route and guides the equipment operator in avoiding damages or hazards.
- Locates solid waste route by scouting ahead to ensure efficiency.
- Investigates missed collections and code violations by determining if solid waste was missed, a late put-out, or a code violation and taking appropriate action.
- Follows safety procedures mandated by federal and state regulations.
- Performs preventative maintenance on equipment as needed.
Supplemental Functions
Performs other similar duties as required.
Knowledge
- Machinery and hand tools of the trade.
Licensing And Certifications
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
- Standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.
- Very Heavy Work: Exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50 - 100 pounds frequently, or from 20 up to 50 pounds constantly.
- Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards.
Required Skills
- Reading and interpreting data;
- Performing basic mathematical calculations;
- Operating machinery and hand tools;
- Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Required Experience
- High school diploma or equivalency, with at least (1) year of relevant experience;
- or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
