Responsibilities

  • Conduct formal and informal white-box (unit-level) and black-box (integration-level) software testing in support of the MSFC Space Systems Division.
  • Verify software functionality in accordance with established formal software requirements.
  • Prepare test documentation, support test readiness and anomaly reviews, and engage with Software Readiness Boards to facilitate formal software product releases.
  • Evaluate test data, correlate results with expected outcomes, and investigate anomalies.
  • Develop and execute test procedures, including pre-test configuration (e.g., instrumentation, data acquisition, software loading/configuration) and post-test tasks (e.g., data archiving and analysis) within a simulated environment.
  • Develop scripting tools for test automation, product release, and regression testing using languages such as Python.
  • Write and maintain technical documentation including test plans, test procedures, and formal verification reports.
  • Review program/project documentation and provide feedback from a software testing perspective; walk test documentation through external review processes.
  • Actively participate in meetings and discussions to support testing tasks as the project architecture evolves and the program progresses through various phases, reviews, and schedule milestones.

Requirements

  • Degree in Software from an ABET-accredited school preferred; other engineering degrees considered with hands-on software test experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and have a STAR ID.
  • Minimum experience requirements: Ph.D. with 19+ years, MS with 23+ years, or BS with 25+ years.
  • Ability to read and comprehend software written in C, C++, or Python, including interfaces such as MIL-STD-1553, Ethernet, TCP/IP, and RS-422.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python) for test automation, product release, and regression testing.
  • Experience with Agile or other software development methodologies.
  • Knowledge of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles and practices.
  • Understanding of UML (Unified Modeling Language) for software design representation.
  • Experience with requirements management tools such as IBM DOORS or DOORS Next Generation (DNG).
  • Experience with GitHub or similar repository tools.
  • Familiarity with software development toolsets; experience with the Atlassian suite (e.g., JIRA, Confluence) is a plus.
  • Proficiency with data reduction and manipulation tools.
  • Strong ability to write and maintain technical documentation.
  • Solid understanding of systems and software engineering processes, including Agile practices and object-oriented development methodologies.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Word).

Work Environment

  • Office environment requiring clear, concise, accurate, and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%).

  • Domestic travel within the USA (5%).
  • Extended periods working at a computer (100%).

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting for extended periods in meetings (10%) and at a desk performing engineering tasks (80%).
  • Ability to use stairs or elevators to access multiple floors and buildings (10%).
  • Operation of general office equipment (e.g., computer, telephone, fax, copier, calculator) (100%).

Schedule

  • Normal workday: 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
  • Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and support technical demands.
  • Regular attendance is essential; adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and make rational decisions (100%).
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and not impose a safety risk.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.

Pay

Compensation range or hourly rate for this position is provided as a good-faith estimate. Actual compensation may vary based on job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and relevant laws. This role is classified as SME2.
