About the role

As an Engineering Manager at WHOOP, you will have technical and people management responsibilities. You will work closely with product management, design, and quality assurance teams to enable your team to deliver features successfully. You will support the team in developing technical designs, architecture, and operational excellence needs while ensuring adherence to best practices and standards for software development. You will guide your team to innovate and maintain the high standards of our platform, driving the success of our core physiology services.

On the people management side, you will manage and mentor a team of up to 12 engineers, provide regular performance feedback, and ensure professional development and growth. You will foster a culture of innovation, teamwork, psychological safety, and continuous learning, promoting a positive work environment where all team members feel valued, supported, and empowered to do their best work.

This role is based in the WHOOP office located in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work out of the Boston, MA office.

Responsibilities

  • Guiding and managing a team of engineers responsible for developing features.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful delivery of these features.
  • Defining technical strategy, architecture, and design for product features.
  • Ensuring the engineering team adheres to best practices, standards, and processes for software development, testing, and deployment.
  • Driving continuous improvement initiatives to optimize the engineering team's productivity, quality, and efficiency.
  • Providing mentorship, guidance, and coaching to team members to ensure their professional development and growth.
  • Fostering a culture of innovation, teamwork, psychological safety, and continuous learning.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a software developer with experience operating in a management or team lead role.
  • Experience managing and growing software engineering teams, including hiring, mentorship, and performance management.
  • Strong technical background building and operating backend systems in production.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams through technical planning and execution in ambiguous environments, delivering iteratively while maintaining quality and reliability.
  • Experience working effectively across functions and with external partners, aligning stakeholders on scope, priorities, and measurable outcomes.
  • Familiarity with distributed systems and cloud infrastructure, including service ownership and production monitoring (e.g., Amazon Web Services (AWS)).
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Passion for wearable technology and a desire to work in a fast-paced startup environment.

Pay

The U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $150,000 - $215,000. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within each range, individual pay is based on factors such as job-related skills, experience, performance, and relevant education or training. In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate will also receive benefits and a generous equity package.
