About the role

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Software Engineer to join our Phantom Works Software Engineering team located in Berkeley, MO. This pivotal role involves leading the design, development, and integration of real-time software systems for air and space applications within an Agile environment. The successful candidate will work on mission-critical defense projects, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions that meet stringent performance, safety, and security standards. The position offers an exciting opportunity to influence the future of defense technology, manage complex software architectures, and mentor engineering teams. While based in Berkeley, MO, the role may require significant travel to other Boeing U.S. locations, including Mesa, AZ; Colorado Springs, CO; Arlington, VA; or El Segundo, CA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or related field
• Active Top Secret U.S. Security Clearance (or recent equivalent)
• Minimum of 5 years of experience leading systems and software architecture development
• Proven experience as an Agile Systems or Software Development Team Lead
• Extensive experience with DevSecOps lifecycle and CI/CD tools (Git, Jenkins, etc.)
• Strong background in configuration management tools such as Git, JIRA, and VersionOne
• Proficiency in scripting and programming languages used for automation and testing (Python, Bash)
• Experience managing subcontractor software deliveries and integrating hardware/software components
• Excellent communication, leadership, and collaboration skills

Responsibilities

• Define, own, and maintain the software architecture emphasizing interface clarity, stability, and maintainability
• Translate system-level requirements into detailed software requirements and models with clear traceability
• Manage software deliverables from suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring adherence to processes and requirements
• Lead Agile software development efforts, including sprint planning, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives
• Serve as the Agile/Delivery lead, prioritizing backlogs, defining sprint goals, and ensuring timely delivery of increments
• Establish and enforce software integration contracts, data models, and message definitions in collaboration with systems and test teams
• Design software for testability, including unit, integration, SIL/HIL testing, and observability features
• Lead DevSecOps practices, ensuring automated, repeatable builds, testing, and deployment pipelines
• Coordinate with Integration & Test teams to align delivery schedules and configuration baselines
• Drive verification and validation activities, analyzing test results and managing defect resolution
• Establish and monitor key delivery metrics to improve predictability, quality, and efficiency
• Mentor and coach engineers on best practices in agile, automation, code quality, and observability
• Contribute to risk management and escalation processes to safeguard project milestones
• Document integration results, test outcomes, and provide insights for design reviews and readiness assessments
