About the role

The Machine Learning Engineer role at Slack focuses on leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence to enhance the Slackbot experience and improve product features. The team is dedicated to delivering business value through practical machine learning applications, working on various projects that impact millions of users. Candidates will collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers to conceptualize and build innovative features. This position requires a strong foundation in machine learning and a passion for driving impactful solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence expertise to drive improvements in the Slackbot experience.
  • Develop ML models supporting ranking, retrieval, and generative AI use-cases.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, and Frontend Engineers to conceptualize and build new features.
  • Produce high-quality results by leading or contributing to large multi-functional projects.
  • Actively own features or systems and define their long-term health.
  • Support the development of sustainable data collection pipelines and management of ML features.
  • Assist the support team in triaging and resolving production issues.
  • Mentor other engineers and conduct code reviews.
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes.

Requirements

  • Experience with functional or imperative programming languages such as PHP, Python, Ruby, Go, C, Scala, or Java.
  • Familiarity with common ML frameworks like PyTorch, Tensorflow, Keras, XGBoost, or Scikit-learn.
  • Experience in fine-tuning LLMs or BERT models.
  • Experience building batch data processing pipelines with tools like Apache Spark, Hadoop, EMR, Map Reduce, Airflow, Dagster, or Luigi.
  • An analytical and data-driven mindset with the ability to measure success with complicated ML/AI products.
  • Experience in putting machine learning models or other data-derived artifacts into production at scale.
  • Strong communication skills to explain complex technical concepts to various stakeholders.

Pay

$128,500 - $285,800 per year
