Software Engineer - Java - NC

Client: Financial Services – Core Java backend development role supporting a large, complex legacy Collections application and its modernization to React.

About the role

6-month contingent assignment (possible extension or conversion) on a 10-person Kanban team delivering quarterly releases, operational support, and continued modernization. Hybrid schedule requiring 3 days onsite in Charlotte, NC.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain enterprise Java backend services using Spring Boot and microservices.
• Design and implement reusable backend components; troubleshoot complex application issues.
• Read, analyze, and enhance existing legacy Java Server Faces code.
• Support application performance, reliability, and maintainability.
• Collaborate on the migration from Java Server Faces to React: build backend APIs, update services, and validate migrated functionality.
• Build and support Kafka-based integrations, configure message processing, apply filtering/routing logic, and investigate event-flow issues.
• Develop and troubleshoot MongoDB-backed services; optimize data access, validation, and query performance.
• Work with OpenShift cloud environments, apply Kubernetes concepts, and collaborate with platform teams on deployment and runtime issues.
• Participate in Kanban ceremonies (planning, refinement, demonstrations) and quarterly release activities.
• Communicate technical issues and solutions clearly to engineers, product owners, QA teams, and business partners.

Requirements

• 5–7 years of strong Core Java backend development experience.
• Hands-on experience with Spring Boot and microservices.
• Kafka experience, including filters and event-processing concepts.
• React experience, preferably supporting Java-to-React modernization.
• Experience with MongoDB and strong technical communication skills.

Nice-to-have

• Financial services or collections application experience.
• Cloud, Kubernetes, or OpenShift experience.
• Ability to read and enhance legacy Java Server Faces code.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools.

Pay

Bill rate: $53 – $57 per hour.
