Software Engineer III, Product Safety & Integrity
Summary
The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a software engineer to join the Product Safety and Integrity Team. This role involves developing tools to identify and mitigate abuse across Wikimedia projects, designing privacy-conscious systems, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to create solutions that balance safety and freedom.
Responsibilities
- Proactively develop and maintain tools for community abuse identification and prevention.
- Design and implement privacy-conscious systems that detect abusive behavior while minimizing false positives and respecting user anonymity.
- Adapt abuse detection and mitigation strategies in response to changes in privacy standards, networking protocols, and platform architecture.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and researchers to create holistic, human-centered solutions that balance safety and freedom.
- Write resilient, maintainable systems and high-quality code with a focus on long-term sustainability.
- Instrument and measure the impact of anti-abuse measures across Wikimedia projects.
Requirements
- 1+ years of related professional experience.
- Experience building and maintaining large-scale applications.
- Proficiency in PHP, JavaScript, or similar programming languages.
- A strong foundation in security principles.
- Experience in driving cross-team objectives and user/product impact.

- Familiarity with abuse fighting or security concerns.
