ID.me is the next-generation digital identity wallet that simplifies how individuals securely prove their identity online. Consumers can verify their identity with ID.me once and seamlessly login across websites without creating new logins or re-verifying. Over 152 million users experience streamlined login and identity verification with ID.me at 20 federal agencies, 45 state government agencies, and 70+ healthcare organizations. More than 600 consumer brands use ID.me to verify communities and user segments, building authentic relationships. This position is based in our Mountain View, CA office five days per week.

About the role

ID.me is seeking a Software Engineer III to join the Developer Portal team, where we're building the self-service platform that enables organizations to rapidly integrate ID.me identity proofing. The Developer Portal brings together the complex steps required for identity proofing integration while meeting standards-body assurance requirements. Today, much of this onboarding is performed manually by in-house Solutions Consultants. Our mission is to enable customers and their developers to register applications, configure identity needs, test in a production-like sandbox, and launch to production through a modern self-service experience.

This is a backend-leaning full-stack role. You will primarily design and build the services, APIs, and data models behind the portal—including application registration, authorization, and developer-facing APIs. You'll also work on the user-facing surfaces of these services using Next.js and React, taking features all the way to the customer rather than stopping at the API boundary. You'll own features end-to-end: from API contract through database schema, deployment, and production operation.

Our backend services are primarily Java (Spring Boot) alongside legacy Ruby services powering identity, organizations, applications, and authorization. The frontend is a micro-frontend platform built with Next.js, React, and TypeScript. Previous Ruby experience is welcome but not required—we value engineers who are comfortable learning whatever technology the problem requires.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement Developer Portal capabilities end-to-end—from API contract design through database schema, frontend integration, and deployment.
  • Independently drive small-to-medium features, coordinating with adjacent teams where work crosses service boundaries.
  • Own the data models and REST API contracts for the capabilities you build, making deliberate decisions about backwards compatibility and versioning. Changes must be additive and safe by default, as customers integrate directly against these contracts.
  • Build secure Developer Portal capabilities spanning OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, enterprise SSO, multi-tenant authorization, relationship-based access control, session management, credential management, and identity-aware application provisioning.
  • Partner with Identity, Organizations, Authorization, and Platform Engineering teams to evolve these capabilities without disrupting existing integrations.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, Architecture, and platform teams to clarify requirements, surface risks early, and maintain a coherent developer experience as the platform grows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4+ years of professional software development experience building and operating production backend services.
  • Strong experience building backend services and REST APIs using a modern web framework such as Java (Spring Boot), Ruby on Rails, Node.js, or similar.
  • Deep experience with relational databases, including authoring complex SQL and performing safe schema migrations against production systems.
  • Experience designing REST API contracts, including versioning and backwards compatibility, and documenting them with OpenAPI or a similar specification.
  • Working proficiency with TypeScript and React—comfortable shipping customer-facing features through a modern frontend without requiring a frontend specialist.
  • Working familiarity with authentication and authorization concepts such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, or related identity standards.
  • Demonstrated experience independently driving small-to-medium technical initiatives from definition through production, including cross-team coordination.
  • Proficiency with AI-assisted development tooling (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) and a commitment to an AI-first engineering culture that leverages these tools to improve software quality, testing, and engineering velocity.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience partnering across Product, Design, and Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building developer experience as an explicit goal (e.g., SDKs, API reference docs, quickstarts, sandbox/test environments, error messages, debugging surfaces, or self-serve onboarding flows) and can speak to how it improved time-to-first-successful-integration for external developers.
  • Experience building developer-facing platforms such as developer portals, API platforms, authentication platforms, cloud platforms, payments platforms, or other self-service developer experiences.
  • Experience with modern Java (21+) and Spring Boot in production codebases.
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, including graph-like or highly relational data models.
  • Experience with Next.js or micro-frontend architectures such as Webpack Module Federation.
  • Experience with enterprise identity standards including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML 2.0, or SCIM.
  • Experience with relationship-based authorization systems such as SpiceDB, OpenFGA, or Zanzibar-inspired architectures.
  • Experience with policy engines such as OPA or Cedar.
  • Experience performing feature-flag-driven migrations in customer-facing production systems.
  • Experience with OpenAPI tooling, docs-as-code, or SDK generation.
  • Familiarity with identity verification, fraud prevention, KYC/AML, or regulated identity systems.
  • Working knowledge of NIST 800-63 IAL/AAL guidelines.
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform and cloud-native application development.
  • Experience with observability platforms such as OpenTelemetry, Honeycomb, Prometheus, and Sentry.
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks such as Playwright, Jest, or Cypress.
  • Startup or high-growth company background.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Health savings account and flexible spending accounts (medical, limited purpose, dependent care, commuter benefit accounts).
  • Basic and voluntary life and AD&D insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Parental leave.
  • Unlimited paid time off, including 8 company-wide holidays.
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance.
  • Accident and critical illness insurance.
  • Referral bonus policy.
  • Employee assistance program.
  • Pet insurance.
  • Travel assistant program.
  • Wellbeing and childcare discounts.
  • Benefit advocates.
  • Learning and development benefit.

Pay

Mountain View, CA Pay Range: $172,528—$192,904 USD (annual base salary). The final offer may vary based on qualifications, professional experiences, skills, education, relevant training, geographic location, and other job-related factors. This range does not include company bonus, incentive for sales roles, equity, or benefits.
