Software Engineer II (US)

About the role
The Software Engineer II performs activities developing components of solutions with a focus on analytics, support, testing, and proof of concepts aligned to business and technology objectives. Provides a broad range of system solutions development to business problems through the development and programming of applications/systems. May also provide research, installation, maintenance, configuration, administration, and/or provisioning of systems/applications.

- Develops program specifications; adapts, integrates, codes, tests, and debugs programs; and is responsible for executing.

Responsibilities
Customer Accountabilities
- Develops new solutions as required for engineering programs and projects within assigned area.
- Develops new features and performs unit/component tests for new application development initiatives aligned to business needs and in accordance with technology architecture standards.
- Supports business enquiries and activities through execution of small enhancements and break/fix implementations (e.g., source code changes).
- May also be responsible for peer code review.
- Works with technology partners to ensure the configuration and custom components meet application requirements and performance goals.
- Analyzes the technical requirements to recommend pragmatic and sound engineering-specific solutions for own area; may be involved in coding/story estimates.
- Works with other stakeholders and internal technology partners to ensure engineering solutions meet technical direction, requirements, performance, time-to-market, and innovation goals.
- Monitors product lifecycles, ensuring specifications and functionality support business objectives and engineering decisions, undertaking re-development where required.
- Documents and verifies system components, applications, system infrastructure, security, integration, operability, and engineering-related architecture designs associated with a program or project.
- Participates in quality management reviews, particularly reviews of designs, prototypes, and other requirements work products to ensure they fulfill the requirements.
- Creates and maintains quality code, ensures defect-free programming consistent with standards; provides code maintenance and support during testing cycles and post-production deployment; participates in reviewing peer coding.
- Provides technical expertise during Incident management, analyzes incident reports and outages, performs impact assessment for incidents, and facilitates internal and external communication throughout incident resolution.
- Participates in identifying and recommending development/testing solutions/tools in support of project/application objectives.
- Assists in the development/maintenance of comprehensive processes for prevention of issues and participates in problem determination and timely resolution of incidents applying appropriate quality measures.

- Monitors service, productivity, and assesses efficiency levels within own function and implements continuous process/performance improvements where opportunities exist.
- Leads/facilitates and/or implements actions/remediation plans to address performance/risk/governance issues.
- Actively manages relationships within and across various business lines, corporate and/or control functions, and ensures alignment with enterprise and/or regulatory requirements.
- Protects the interests of the organization – identifies and manages risks, and escalates non-standard, high-risk activities as necessary.
- Keeps abreast of emerging issues, trends, and evolving regulatory requirements and assesses potential impacts.

Requirements
- Undergraduate degree, Postgraduate degree, or Technical Certificate.
- Strong academic background (e.g., computer science, engineering).
- 3-5 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong software engineering fundamentals across backend services, APIs, data modeling, testing, and operational support.
- Experience developing secure, maintainable code in Python and modern languages and frameworks, preferably TypeScript/Node.js and cloud-native patterns.
- Practical knowledge of cloud platforms, cloud-native application patterns, infrastructure-as-code concepts, containerized services, observability, and secure deployment practices.
- Working knowledge of CI/CD, automated testing, dependency management, observability, and incident support.
- Ability to translate requirements into technical designs, estimates, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to explain technical choices, risks, and trade-offs to engineers and stakeholders.
- Experience with TypeScript, Node.js, or similar modern development frameworks.
- Exposure to Azure, AWS, containerized development environments, cloud deployment practices, CI/CD, automated testing, or infrastructure-as-code concepts.
- Interest or experience in data management, data governance, metadata, or catalog platforms, including DataHub, OpenMetadata, Collibra, or comparable solutions.
- Understanding of lineage and provenance concepts including OpenLineage, W3C PROV-oriented models, and automated lineage capture patterns preferred.
- Experience or exposure to Elasticsearch or OpenSearch concepts.
- Understanding of security and compliance engineering concepts, including RBAC, ABAC, SSO/MFA, secrets management, audit logging, access governance, network controls, and secure configuration baselines.
- Exposure to pandas for data analysis, profiling, transformation, or automation use cases is a plus.
- Familiarity with responsible use of coding copilots or AI-assisted developer workflows.
Pay
$79,160 - $127,670 USD per year. TD is committed to providing fair and equitable compensation opportunities to all colleagues.
