About The Role

The Engineer II Software position at U.S. Xpress is a pivotal role responsible for developing and maintaining the tools that power the company's freight platform. This role requires a passionate problem-solver with experience in building scalable, reliable software solutions.

The Engineer II will contribute to defining, designing, and executing the technical roadmap, ensuring that systems are future-proofed for scalability and performance. Working in a collaborative, agile environment, the successful candidate will engage with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative features that enhance service performance, security, and cost-efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field with at least 3 years of professional experience, or Master's degree with 1 year of relevant experience
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Java, Python, JavaScript, Go, or C#
  • Experience with unit testing and debugging in shell and AWS environments
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services including IAM, S3, and DynamoDB
  • Prior experience mentoring junior engineers or leading small development tasks
  • Ability to create comprehensive technical documentation
  • Transportation, logistics, or technology industry experience is a plus
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills and team collaboration abilities
  • Experience owning and maintaining simple applications or modules, adhering to best coding practices
  • Familiarity with debugging tools and techniques
  • Ability to adapt to organizational changes and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain innovative software solutions to enhance service performance, security, durability, and cost efficiency
  • Own the full development lifecycle, focusing on adding new features and functionalities to existing applications
  • Apply software engineering best practices to ensure high-quality deliverables
  • Develop high-quality distributed systems software that meets organizational standards
  • Participate actively in an agile development environment, prioritizing critical projects
  • Collaborate across departments and teams to deliver new features and products effectively
  • Maintain comprehensive technical documentation to support ongoing development and maintenance
  • Engage in code reviews, testing, and troubleshooting to ensure optimal performance
  • Stay updated with emerging technologies and industry trends to continually improve system architecture
