About the role

Fintech at Toast operates one of the most critical portions of the Toast infrastructure: processing payments on behalf of our restaurants and ensuring that restaurants are paid in a timely manner. Payment processing is a key source of Toast’s revenue and also the lifeblood of our customers; we process millions of dollars in transactions per day.

We are seeking a Software Engineer II to join our Payments team. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of our unified payment processing solution. This platform offers a single, integrated service for payment acceptance across various channels and supports a configurable enterprise approach. It is designed to allow a build-once, available-to-all strategy for both existing and emerging payment methods.

Responsibilities

• Be part of a team working collaboratively with Product Managers and other engineers designing, building and maintaining high performance, flexible and highly scalable microservices.
• Use cutting-edge technologies and best practices to optimize for performance and usability, ultimately enhancing the overall restaurant management experience.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams across Toast.
• Advocate best coding practices to raise the bar for you, your team and the company.
• Leverage cutting edge AI tools to enhance your development workflow, improve velocity, and help pioneer new approaches to building - contributing to a culture of innovation and productivity across the team.

Requirements

• 2+ years of experience in designing and implementing robust backend services using Kotlin and/or Java.
• Demonstrated experience with microservices architecture and containerization technologies for enhanced scalability and maintainability.
• Understanding of backend architecture patterns, including microservices, monolithic, and event-driven architectures.
• Experience developing scalable, secure, and performant backend systems.
• Understanding of testing principles, including unit testing, integration testing, and end-to-end testing.

Nice to haves

• Experience with Payment systems is desired, but not required.
• Experience with AWS DynamoDB and PostgreSQL.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms, such as AWS or Google Cloud Platform.

Pay

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills, experience, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions if eligible), equity, and benefits.

• Zone A: $133,000—$213,000 USD
• Zone B: $115,000—$184,000 USD
• Zone C: $104,000—$166,000 USD
