Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products in our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI.

Within the Azure Monitor team, we are looking for a Software Engineer II and Senior Software Engineer to help build and evolve the cloud-native infrastructure layer for Azure Monitor and other observability services. This role focuses on owning complex Kubernetes-based platform systems end-to-end, driving architecture across teams, improving reliability and security at scale, and shaping how AI-assisted and AI-agentic capabilities are safely applied to infrastructure operations.
Within Microsoft Fabric, the Azure Monitor team builds services that enable customers to monitor, detect, troubleshoot, and mitigate issues with their services through an increasingly agentic experience. Azure Monitor includes Log Analytics, Application Insights, Container Insights, Hosted Prometheus, Azure Managed Grafana, and more. Azure Monitor is also the platform upon which Microsoft Sentinel is built. We run some of the world’s highest scale observability services, processing over 1.5 exabytes of logs daily and tracking over 100 billion active metrics.

What we build
- Planetary-scale, Kubernetes-based cloud infrastructure platforms for Azure Monitor workloads.
- Highly scalable, resilient microservices and operational tooling hosted in the cloud.
- Availability indicators, monitoring, alerting, diagnostics, and auto-mitigation capabilities.
- Secure, compliant, cost-efficient infrastructure patterns that improve reliability across Azure Monitor services.
Responsibilities
- Lead design and code reviews across feature areas and participate in all stages of the engineering lifecycle (initial research and discovery, quick iteration on promising concepts, solution prototyping and development, deployment, and live-site support).
- Develop and demonstrate breadth, depth, and leadership while wearing multiple hats.
- Work with multiple partner teams and deploy across all Azure regions.
- Design, build, and operate cloud infrastructure platform components built on Kubernetes, with a strong focus on reliability, security, networking, diagnosability, and global-scale cost efficiency.
- Drive well-scoped design and implementation work for cloud-native infrastructure used by Azure Observability services across multiple environments.
- Own production-quality features end-to-end, including design, coding, validation, deployment, monitoring, and live-site support.
- Improve Kubernetes-based operational patterns, including service-to-service communication, workload placement, traffic management, and resiliency practices.
- Partner with adjacent infrastructure, observability, and platform teams to align dependencies, clarify ownership, and deliver supportable solutions.

Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
- Experience with Kubernetes, containers, cloud-native infrastructure, distributed systems, or large-scale production services.
- Experience improving reliability, security, observability, networking, or operational excellence for live services.
- Experience partnering across teams to deliver infrastructure capabilities with clear ownership and supportability.
- Experience with C#, Java, C++, Go, Python, or similar programming languages.
Pay
Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $102,100 - $202,200 per year. Within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range is USD $133,800 - $219,200 per year.
Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. Within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year.
