About The Role

D-Wave is seeking a Software Engineer I to join our Systems Software Engineering team. In this entry-level role, you will contribute to the platform infrastructure, backend services, and internal tools that enable reliable access to and operation of our gate-model quantum computers. Working alongside and under the guidance of senior engineers, you will build clean, documented, and well-tested software that connects quantum computing hardware with the applications and services used to operate it. You will collaborate with software engineers, scientists, embedded developers, and other engineering disciplines to solve complex problems at the intersection of software and quantum computing hardware.

We are looking for a curious and thoughtful problem solver who enjoys learning, collaborating, and developing reliable, maintainable software. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the quantum processor execution stack and grow your skills through visible, technically challenging projects that help advance quantum computing.

What You'll Do

  • Collaborate with software engineers, scientists, and other engineers to understand requirements and implement effective solutions
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software and tools used in the development and operation of quantum processors
  • Write clean, well-documented code, and participate in code reviews to ensure code quality and maintainability
  • Collaborate with embedded software developers on the software interfaces to instruments, control systems, and quantum processors
  • Troubleshoot and debug issues, identify bottlenecks, and implement solutions to optimize performance and improve the user experience
  • Contribute throughout the software development lifecycle from design and implementation through testing, deployment, and operational support

About You

  • BS or higher in computer science, electrical/computer engineering, math, or physics
  • Experience with Python and at least one compiled programming language such as C, C++, Rust, Go, or Java
  • Good understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including version control, testing, debugging, and code quality
  • Strong problem-solving skills, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced team environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a desire to learn from experienced engineers and contribute to a multi-disciplinary team
  • Able to effectively document and communicate technical concepts
  • Competence with Git for version control and build tools
  • Experience with RESTful APIs
  • Experience using cloud platforms, specifically AWS
  • Experience with software testing principles, including unit testing, integration testing, and end-to-end testing
  • Experience using scientific computing libraries such as NumPy. Exposure to quantum API’s such as Qiskit and quantum computing is beneficial but not required.
