About The Position As a Software Engineer III in Upbound’s engineering department, specializing in Ruby on Rails, you will play a crucial role in designing, developing, and maintaining our core backend software platforms and distributed services. You will work as a strong, autonomous contributor on a team of talented engineers, helping build high-quality, scalable, and secure software solutions that power our financial platforms. Key Responsibilities Contributing to the full software development lifecycle, from concept and design to automated testing, deployment, and monitoring.Designing and implementing robust, scalable, and well-documented backend services and APIs primarily using Ruby on Rails.Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including delivery managers, product managers, technical leads, and other engineers to deliver new features and enhancements in an agile scrum environment.Ensuring code quality through comprehensive unit/integration testing (TDD), thorough code reviews, and adherence to team best practices.Identifying and addressing application performance bottlenecks, database query inefficiencies, and potential security vulnerabilities.Mentoring and guiding junior and mid-level developers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.Staying current with emerging technologies and industry trends to drive innovation and efficiency within the team. Required Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience in the industry.5+ years of professional software engineering experience in backend or distributed systems development.Strong proficiency in Ruby and Ruby on Rails, with a deep understanding of Rails conventions, lifecycle, and best practices.Strong understanding of software development principles, design patterns, and RESTful API architecture.Experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) and modern automated testing frameworks (e.g., RSpec).Strong experience in database design, query optimization, and management (PostgreSQL and NoSQL).Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).Familiarity with microservices, background job processing (Sidekiq, etc.), and event-driven architectures.Solid understanding of Agile methodologies and CI/CD practices.Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and collaborative communication skills. Preferred Skills & Qualifications Preferred Skill: Elixir – Experience with or a strong interest in learning Elixir (Phoenix / OTP).Experience with event streaming technologies such as Apache Kafka or message brokers like RabbitMQ/SQS.Experience in the fintech industry or working with high-volume transaction/payment systems.Familiarity with TypeScript/Node.js.
