About the Unit

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Air National Guard Program Division (ANGPD) is currently seeking an engineer for a full-time research faculty position in the Air National Guard Air Force Reserve Command Test Center (AATC) operations section. This role is based in Tucson, AZ, within the Open Systems Integration and Test Branch (OSITB).

Purpose

The Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software applications and products. Additionally, the engineer manages software development teams, provides technical leadership, and establishes software development lifecycle practices and processes. The role requires proficiency in programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, C, C++, C#, Ruby, Python, Scala, and Groovy, along with extensive knowledge of software development, computer operating systems, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), DevOps, API development, container development, and distributed systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform software development, debugging, modification, enhancement, and documentation
  • Design, test, and develop computer software to meet program requirements
  • Apply expertise in computing systems to define requirements and develop software designs, recognizing limitations of target hardware platforms
  • Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts
  • Contribute to research reports, presentations, white papers, and competitive proposals
  • Create and analyze network protocols
  • Design, develop, and test software on fighter, transport, and tanker aircraft for open-systems compute enclaves running on aircraft hardware
  • Build and maintain services that translate aircraft message data into common open formats (pass-through, UCI, JSON) for cross-platform compatibility
  • Develop containerized applications and the CI/CD pipelines that build, test, and deploy them
  • Work directly with DoD end-users to turn operational needs into requirements, backlog items, and sprint work
  • Support integration and flight test of software on aircraft, and document software and network architecture

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering experience in one or more modern languages (e.g., Python, C++, Java, or similar)
  • Experience with containerized computing (e.g., Docker/Kubernetes)
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps and CI/CD practices
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance (U.S. citizenship required)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret or Top Secret clearance
  • Experience with C++ and Python
  • Familiarity with open-systems architectures, Government Reference Architectures, or message standards such as UCI
  • Exposure to fighter aircraft avionics, mission systems, or DoD system integration
  • Experience writing test plans and procedures for complex DoD systems, platforms, or environments

Education and Experience

  • 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Information Technology, or other similar degree
  • 3 years of related experience with a Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Information Technology, or other similar degree
  • 0 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Information Technology, or other similar degree
