Software Engineer – Database Developer

About the Role

We are seeking senior software engineers to support a large-scale space ground system transitioning from a prototype into full operations. This role requires architectural thinkers and experienced leaders who can help shape and mature the system, not just execute tasks. The ideal candidate will possess general ground-to-space or space-to-ground experience, strong system-level knowledge, and prior experience in mission-critical environments. This position focuses on architecting, designing, developing, and testing a data system to handle massive data throughput.

Responsibilities

• Architect, design, develop, and test a data system to handle large data and video demands.
• Redesign a reference program for operational rigor and architect a real-time, mission-critical ground system.
• Lead the design and implementation of database solutions at extreme scale, supporting petabyte-scale data accumulation.
• Design systems that integrate mission planning, real-time visualization, and continuous operations.
• Partner with stakeholders to translate software requirements into models that meet operational and performance requirements.
• Lead software system-level analyses to identify risks, issues, and opportunities.
• Lead code reviews to ensure alignment with requirements and standards.
• Research and oversee the implementation of current and emerging software technologies, tools, and frameworks.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field.
• 3+ years' experience with large Database Management Systems (DBMS) requiring proficiency in SQL and database design.
• Experience transitioning systems from prototype to operations.
• Comfort with ambiguity and early-phase architecture.
• Foundational Computer Science knowledge and object-oriented design and software patterns.
• Knowledge of Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes and data backup/recovery techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Software Engineering principles such as Configuration Management, Architecture, and Life Cycle Management.
• Experience with one or more of the following: Java, C++, Python, JS frameworks (REACT, jQuery UI, Open Layers), Spring Framework, Hibernate, RDBMS, MongoDB, REST, and OpenAPI.
• Experience using dependency management and automation services (e.g., Maven, Gradle, Git, Jenkins).
• Experience with cloud-based infrastructure (e.g., AWS, Azure).
• Familiarity with practices such as test-driven development (TDD), agile software development, and CI/CD management.
• Experience with data system optimization, including performance tuning and indexing.
• Experience with RDBMS (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB) data systems.
• Experience with systems engineering or software development on space-based or ground-based systems.
