Software Engineer, Credit Risk Platform
About the role
Chime Engineering is growing rapidly as we scale to support the financial needs of our members. We are looking for driven engineers to join our Credit Risk Platform team, where you’ll build backend services and internal tools that help Chime manage credit risk and losses across all of our credit products, including Loans, MyPay, SpotMe, and a growing pipeline of new credit products in development.
This team is building a shared risk platform that expands with every new product we launch. A key part of the mission is being able to onboard new credit products as a platform capability, not a reinvention of decisioning, controls, and monitoring each time. You’ll partner closely with Credit Risk, Product, Analytics, and Data Science to help risk experts iterate safely using better tooling, richer data, and clear guardrails. That includes integrating third-party data sources and building systems that are reliable, observable, and auditable, because they sit on the critical path of member experiences and credit outcomes.
Pay
The base salary offered for this role and level of experience will begin at $133,000 and up to $184,000. Full-time employees are also eligible for a bonus, competitive equity package, and benefits. The actual base salary offered may be higher, depending on your location, skills, qualifications, and experience.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services and internal tools that support risk strategy across multiple products (e.g., eligibility, limits, exposure tracking, policy enforcement)
- Contribute to reusable platform primitives that make it faster and safer to launch new credit products without duplicating risk decisioning and controls
- Build and improve workflows that enable Credit Risk teams to adjust strategies (rules, thresholds, segmentation) with appropriate guardrails and review processes
- Integrate third-party data sources used in decisioning and monitoring, including implementing data validation, error handling, and resilience to vendor changes
- Add instrumentation, dashboards, and alerts for key risk and loss signals, and participate in on-call/incident response as part of a supportive team rotation
- Collaborate with senior engineers to learn best practices in system design, testing, and operational excellence
- Proactively identify reliability and scalability improvements and drive them to completion with mentorship and feedback
Requirements
- 3+ years developing software in a production environment
- Experience with Ruby on Rails or comparable frameworks, building and operating APIs
- Experience working with relational databases and caching systems, and writing safe schema changes and migrations
- Familiarity with distributed systems fundamentals (async processing, idempotency, retries, backfills) and an interest in learning deeper system design
- A strong appreciation for maintainable, well-tested code and a willingness to improve existing systems, not just ship new ones
- Comfort working across teams to clarify requirements, communicate tradeoffs, and deliver incrementally
- Interest in data-driven systems and integrating external/third-party data sources (fintech or risk experience is a plus, not required)
Qualifications
- BS/BA in Computer Science or related field
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure
- Experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes
- Experience with NoSQL databases like MongoDB or Cassandra
- Experience with microservices architecture and API design
- Experience with security best practices and compliance standards
Skills
- Strong understanding of software engineering principles and practices
- Experience with version control systems (Git)
- Experience with performance tuning and optimization
- Experience with continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD)
- Experience with automated testing (unit, integration, end-to-end)
- Experience with monitoring and logging tools (Prometheus, ELK stack)
Benefits
- Competitive salary based on experience
- 401k match plus great medical, dental, vision, life, and disability benefits
- Generous vacation policy and company-wide Chime Days, bonus company-wide paid days off
- 1% of your time off to support local community organizations of your choice
- Annual wellness stipend to use towards eligible wellness related expenses
- Up to 24 weeks of paid parental leave for birthing parents and 12 weeks of paid parental leave for non-birthing parents
- Access to Maven, a family planning tool, with $15k lifetime reimbursement for egg freezing, fertility treatments, adoption, and more.
- In-person and virtual events to connect with your fellow Chimers—think cooking classes, guided meditations, music festivals, mixology classes, paint nights, etc., and delicious snack boxes, too!
