Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with product, design, other engineers, and newsroom partners to build content data products and APIs within the NYT's publishing platform, including internal data solutions and external offerings
  • Take ownership of features or components, driving them from requirements gathering through design, implementation, QA, deployment, and monitoring
  • Use AI to process our archive and turn unstructured data into structured data, while developing a deep understanding of what we're building and how to use it
  • Ensure a high degree of code quality, security, and system observability
  • Drive architectural excellence by establishing best practices for high concurrency, data-intensive systems
  • Champion a "quality-first" culture by architecting automated testing frameworks that ensure service reliability at scale
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of software engineering experience
  • Fluency in backend technologies (Go, Python, Java or similar) and SQL databases
  • Experience designing and building data backend services and APIs that other teams can build on
  • Experience with data feeds development
  • Experience with CI/CD concepts and tooling
  • Experience with infrastructure orchestration and familiarity with cloud computing platforms like GCP or AWS
  • Understanding of application and data security best practices
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively as a part of a cross-functional team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Front-end familiarity (JavaScript, React) to contribute across the stack when needed
  • Understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, ETL/ELT processes, data pipelines, and data architecture
  • Experience with AI/ML
  • Experience with Content Management Systems
  • Experience with metadata and tagging
  • Familiarity with extracting or digitizing content from multiple sources

Pay and Benefits

The annual base pay range for this role is between: $110,000 - $130,000 USD. For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
