About the role
ERock is a leader and innovator in distributed energy, the first smart-grid supplier to US energy consumers. The company installs, operates, and integrates flexible, low-cost, quick-response distributed generation to increase reliability and stability, reduce costs, and decrease carbon footprint. ERock’s backup generators ensure customers remain powered during outages, providing highly reliable, ultra-clean backup generation at a fraction of the cost of traditional solutions. We seek engineers who share our commitment to customer service, innovation, and ingenuity.
Responsibilities
- Build and evolve C#/.NET back-end services on Azure that carry telemetry from edge devices through cloud ingestion into APIs, stores, and internal tools.
- Design ingestion and processing paths that tolerate intermittent connectivity, devices going dark and returning, and messages arriving late, duplicated, or out of order.
- Shape how large-scale time-series telemetry is captured, organized, queried, and retained while keeping solutions as simple as the problem allows.
- Diagnose issues end-to-end—from device messages through cloud ingestion to APIs and storage—using logs, metrics, and traces, and explain findings clearly.
- Maintain and improve internal applications, factory-floor stations, and dashboards used by operations, manufacturing, and field teams.
- Write automated tests, ship via CI/CD pipelines, and keep services observable and supportable in production.
- Contribute to design and system documentation reviewed by utility customers’ security teams.
- Partner with software, hardware, data science, and engineering teams to turn complex signals into actionable insights.
Requirements
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Proficiency with C#/.NET and object-oriented design.
- Experience building cloud applications; Azure strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of REST APIs and relational databases, plus comfort with analytics, columnar, or time-series data stores.
- Working comfort on Linux, including reading logs and troubleshooting on a remote machine.
- Experience with automated testing and CI/CD.
- Ability to investigate issues using logs, metrics, and traces, and to explain findings clearly.
- Willingness to learn fast and to use AI tools to move faster.
- Based in the Greater Houston area and able to work a hybrid schedule from the Houston office, including time on the factory floor alongside hardware and manufacturing teams.
- Mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; ability to lift and carry files up to 20 pounds, read printed materials and a computer screen, and communicate effectively in person and over the phone.
Preferred Qualifications
- Enjoys a small team where people own whole slices of a system rather than a narrow lane.
- Follows a problem through from device to dashboard rather than stopping at a team boundary.
- Communicates clearly in writing and in person, collaborates well, and stays calm under pressure.
- Writes things down: design notes and runbooks that still make sense months later.
- Balances pragmatism with curiosity; simplifies first, then refines.
- Makes thoughtful trade-offs and cares about maintainability, tests, and observability.
- Enjoys learning new things and using technology, AI included, to solve hard problems.
- Enjoys working alongside experts from diverse engineering backgrounds, including hardware and plant-floor teams.
- Hands-on experience with Azure Data Explorer and KQL, or comparable time-series platforms.
- Experience with Azure IoT Hub, Device Provisioning Service, or comparable device-fleet platforms.
- Exposure to industrial, energy, manufacturing, or other physical-world systems where data quality and uptime have real consequences.
