About the Company

Current Surgical is a startup developing technology at the frontier of engineering and biology. Our first product is a smart microinvasive needle that precisely destroys tumors without damaging healthy tissue, enabling treatment of cancers that are untreatable today. Our technology is backed by the National Institute of Health, National Science Foundation, and top-tier venture capital firms (True Ventures, 1517, and SciFounders) focused on dramatically improving the accuracy and accessibility of surgery.

About the Role

We are looking for a software engineer excited to develop technology at the forefront of medical devices and precision surgery. You will apply your skills across multiple projects, including:

  • Working directly with co-founders to design, develop, and test our clinical prototype.
  • Architecting and implementing lab automation for ongoing experimentation and device testing.

These challenges integrate biophysics, image processing, deep learning, novel electronics, ultrasound, and real-time signal processing. The ideal candidate thrives in a startup environment and is eager to tackle technical challenges. This role offers a unique opportunity to work across many areas of a hardtech biomedical startup, including preclinical studies, clinician interfacing, and device/tool development.

You will develop tools (both internal and external) and custom user interfaces for device prototyping and testing. Collaboration with mechanical, electrical, and research teams is key to achieving our clinical goals. As we grow, this role is expected to evolve into a leadership position.

Qualifications

  • MS or BS in computer science or engineering, with 2+ years of equivalent work experience.
  • PhD in electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, medical physics, or closely related fields (also considered).

Skills

  • Entrepreneurial, self-motivated, and independent; desire to grow technically.
  • Excellent technical and analytical capability, coupled with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Python, with experience in rapid prototyping.
  • Experience with numeric analysis (numpy, scipy), image processing (opencv, scikit-image), and deep learning packages (pytorch).
  • Familiarity with user interface design and architectures (e.g., MVP, MVVP, MVC, Elm), ideally for desktop applications.
  • Familiarity with Qt in Python (PySide or PyQt).
  • Knowledge of Python or Matlab for processing test results and test/measurement automation.
  • General knowledge of medical imaging (e.g., ultrasound, CT, MRI) and image-guided surgery (a plus).
  • Experience with ultrasound prototyping hardware (e.g., Verasonics, Cephasonics) (a plus).
  • Experience applying image processing, computer vision, and/or deep learning techniques to medical images (a plus).
