Engineering$165k–$180k/yrFull-time

The Farmer’s Dog was born from a mission to change the landscape of pet health, providing dogs and their humans with honest, smart, and simple care. We’re starting by radically improving the $90 billion pet food industry, replacing bags of highly-processed pellets with a personalized subscription service that sends complete and balanced, freshly-made dog food directly to customers’ doors. Our ultimate goal is to create innovative, delightful, and personalized experiences across all aspects of pet care. We believe our direct-to-consumer business model, holistic approach to growth, and dynamic culture uniquely position us to shepherd this industry into the future. To date, we’ve delivered over 1 billion meals nationwide and raised over $150M in funding to build a company as healthy as the dogs eating those meals.

About the role

At The Farmer's Dog, we believe the best customer experience comes from owning the technology that powers it. We design, build, and operate our systems in-house—from subscription and e-commerce to fulfillment and delivery—so every dog and human gets the right experience, every time. As a Software Engineer 3 on the Business Logic pod, you'll work on the systems at the core of how The Farmer’s Dog operates: subscriptions, pricing, billing, and order generation. These systems are foundational to everything we do, and we're reshaping them for the next phase of growth.

You’ll design and implement significant features across these systems, making technical decisions that improve them and reduce complexity over time. You’ll also develop deep expertise in parts of our technology and become a go-to resource for your teammates. You’ll partner closely with other engineering pods, Product, Design, Data Analytics, and Lifecycle Comms to solve problems collaboratively. We care deeply about building reliable, scalable systems and working well together, regularly whiteboarding, pair programming, and reviewing architecture with peers who set a high bar.

Responsibilities

  • Design and ship medium-to-large features end-to-end, taking defined problems from design through production while making sound technical decisions.
  • Turn problems into shippable work by breaking larger efforts into increments that can ship continuously, weighing in on sequencing and dependencies, and surfacing blockers early.
  • Improve the systems you work in by reducing technical debt, designing data models and contracts that hold up as we iterate, and making decisions that keep future changes efficient.
  • Debug systematically and build with quality in mind, diagnosing root causes using available data and considering reliability, performance, and security in your code.
  • Partner across engineering, Product, Design, Data Analytics, and other teams, bringing the right people into the work early and communicating decisions and tradeoffs clearly.
  • Become a go-to person by building deep expertise in a technology or domain, helping teammates succeed, and providing meaningful, actionable feedback in code reviews.
  • Keep learning and challenge how we work by taking initiative to learn new technologies, questioning processes that aren’t serving the team, and using tools like AI thoughtfully.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience building and shipping production software as a strong full-stack engineer, comfortable working across backend and frontend systems.
  • Deep care for quality, with the ability to build accurate mental models of how systems work, think critically about details, and improve the codebase as you build.
  • Expertise in at least one technology or domain, with a natural curiosity and eagerness to keep learning—enough that teammates come to you for help.
  • Ownership mindset and proactive self-starter attitude, able to make progress in ambiguous environments and prioritize effectively across competing work.
  • Resourcefulness and action-oriented approach, finding the information you need, surfacing risks early, and looking for practical ways to move complex work forward.
  • Strong communication skills, able to absorb complexity and distill it into clear decisions and tradeoffs while collaborating across functions.
  • Commitment to improving systems, tools, and practices, comfortable questioning conventions and suggesting better ways of working.
  • Good judgment about when to use new technologies and tools, including AI, to improve work without adding unnecessary complexity.
  • Love for dogs.
