Software Development Manager, AWS Network Firewall
About the role
Lead a high-performing engineering team to innovate AWS Network Firewall, a next-generation product that provides automated, intelligence-driven network security for Amazon VPCs. The service offers granular rule creation, automatic threat blocking using AWS managed rules powered by Amazon threat intelligence, and enterprise-grade protection at cloud scale. As part of AWS Infrastructure Services, you’ll help design, deliver, and operate the global infrastructure that powers the cloud, collaborating with diverse teams of engineers, security experts, and operations managers.
Responsibilities
- Own the outcomes of a team delivering high-impact software that protects millions of customer workloads
- Manage team performance, career development, and growth through regular coaching, mentorship, and feedback
- Build and execute technical roadmaps in partnership with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to prioritize and deliver the right work on time
- Evaluate trade-offs between operational excellence and feature development, balancing short-term needs with long-term architectural goals
- Inspire a positive, inclusive team culture where engineers deliver their best work
- Drive engineering best practices including code quality, testing, CI/CD, and operational readiness
- Collaborate cross-functionally with security, networking, and infrastructure teams to deliver integrated solutions
About the team
The AWS Network Firewall team delivers a managed network security service that simplifies protection for Amazon Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs). The team combines deep networking expertise with security knowledge to build scalable, high-performance solutions that safeguard cloud infrastructure without compromising application performance. The team integrates seamlessly with AWS network services like Transit Gateway (TGW), NAT Gateway (NATGW), and Internet Gateway (IGW), and fosters a culture of ownership, curiosity, and customer obsession.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of engineering experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi-tier web services
- 3+ years of Software Engineer, Software Developer, or related occupational experience
- 1+ years of providing technical leadership and project management for the software development lifecycle
- 1+ years of developing large-scale, multi-tiered distributed software systems using Java, C#, or C++
- 1+ years of developing large-scale, multi-tiered distributed software systems using service-oriented architecture
- 1+ years of developing large-scale, multi-tiered distributed software systems using distributed programming
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience communicating with users, technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching, and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills and effectiveness
Pay
Base salary range: $184,900.00 - $250,200.00 USD annually (Herndon, VA). Final compensation will include sign-on payments, restricted stock units (RSUs), and will vary based on experience, qualifications, and location.
