About the role

The vast majority of data in the world is cold—durably and securely retained for long periods of time, but rarely ever accessed. Conventional storage systems are a poor fit for this domain as they are typically optimized for speed rather than space and cost. Amazon Glacier has been designed from the very start to provide secure, durable, and scalable data storage at a very low cost. This unusual set of constraints requires us to solve fascinating scaling and algorithmic problems that have never been tackled at our scale.

As an engineer on our team, you'll have the opportunity to lead the design and implementation of a distributed storage service that operates at cloud scale. Your work will range from distributed system service development in Java to low-level systems coding that interfaces directly with hardware. You'll bring brand-new systems to production, solving challenging computer science problems along the way. We are looking for an engineer who is keen to lead, invent, and build what could become the largest data storage service on the planet.

Our team works together to provide work/life balance for all members. We recognize that circumstances vary, and we balance work across the team to maintain high standards for our customers while allowing for rich and happy personal lives. While Glacier services are highly available, occasional SLA excursions may occur. To minimize impact, we have On-Call rotations, structured to ensure focused periods of availability and uninterrupted time for your day job.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of a distributed storage service operating at cloud scale.
  • Develop solutions ranging from distributed system services in Java to low-level systems coding interfacing with hardware.
  • Bring new systems to production, solving complex computer science challenges.
  • Work on projects such as:
    • Reducing the internal cost of migrating customer data to Glacier storage media.
    • Optimizing data placement for faster retrievals and garbage collection.
    • Owning the migration pipeline from discovering customer data to generating media-ready data units.
    • Optimizing data migration for speed and security.

  • 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  • 5+ years of programming experience with at least one software programming language.
  • 5+ years of experience leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new and existing systems.
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or leading an engineering team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of full software development life cycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
