About the role

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. This team supports all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure customers have continual access to innovation. You’ll collaborate with diverse teams of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers to maintain high standards for safety, security, and seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost.

The Route 53 Health Checks team owns a highly available endpoint monitoring service that checks the health of millions of computers worldwide every few seconds. This data helps Route 53 DNS, Amazon Elastic Load Balancing, Amazon RDS, Amazon S3, and other AWS services maintain high availability. The team is a mix of new and experienced engineers who support each other through mentoring and thorough code reviews, focusing on career growth and skill development.

Responsibilities

This is a highly technical back-end role focused on the distributed health checking infrastructure and public API. The service primarily runs on a Java and Linux-based stack with interactions across various AWS services and internal tools. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and operating a distributed health checking system
  • Working with public AWS services and Amazon-internal tools
  • Participating in on-call rotations (approximately once every two months) to ensure system reliability
  • Collaborating with the team to resolve issues and prevent recurring problems
  • Contributing to system design, testing, and fault tolerance improvements

Requirements

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of experience in system design or architecture (design patterns, reliability, and scaling)
  • 1+ years of experience designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, or distributed software applications using C#, C++, Java, or Perl
  • 1+ years of Object-Oriented Design experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent

Pay

Base salary range: $143,700 - $194,400 USD annually (for Seattle, WA). Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
