About the role

Vantor is seeking an experienced Software Development Engineer to join our Basemaps team. We are looking for a hands-on technical leader who is passionate about solving complex problems and delivering customer-focused solutions. The ideal candidate is eager to learn and develop technologies related to vector data processing, remote sensing, geospatial systems, and AI-driven applications. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of cutting-edge geospatial and photogrammetric technologies and modern software engineering. Our solutions are deployed primarily in AWS cloud environments and support advanced data processing and analytics capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Own and maintain the technical roadmap for our feature data products.
• Establish engineering priorities in partnership with product owners, engineering leadership, platform teams, and operational stakeholders.
• Provide architectural direction for scalable geospatial and vector data-processing systems.
• Remain hands-on in software development, prototyping, code reviews, debugging, performance optimization, and production support.
• Evaluate and adopt modern open-source technologies for geospatial processing, distributed computing, workflow orchestration, and data management.
• Balance near-term delivery priorities with team members during stand-ups.
• Demonstrate working software and contribute to iterative product development.
• Monitor and maintain AWS-based system health and performance.
• Participate in system design, requirements gathering, and technical documentation.
• Collaborate across teams to coordinate dependencies and deliver integrated capabilities.
• Promote the effective use of AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity, software quality, and documentation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Geography, or a related technical field.
• 8+ years of professional experience.
• Demonstrated experience serving as a lead engineer or technical owner for a software platform, product, or major technical initiative.
• Strong understanding of Docker containerization technologies.
• Strong working knowledge of GDAL/OGR, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, spatial indexing, coordinate reference systems, and spatial data-processing concepts.
• Proven ability to provide technical guidance and mentor other engineers without direct management responsibility.
• Familiarity with Agile software engineering practices and methodologies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Geospatial Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with modern geospatial technologies and formats, including GeoParquet, DuckDB spatial, vector tiles, FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage, or Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF.
• Experience working throughout the full software development lifecycle.
• Knowledge of AWS or comparable cloud platforms.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins or similar tools.
• Knowledge of geospatial, geodesic, photogrammetric, or remote sensing technologies.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Self-motivated, collaborative, and detail-oriented with a willingness to work closely with technical systems and processes.

Pay

To support pay transparency, Vantor includes salary ranges in all U.S. job postings. Starting pay for this role will fall within the listed range and will be based on factors such as experience, qualifications, skills, location, and market conditions. Candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the role should not expect to receive compensation at the top of the range.

• Colorado: $124,000.00 - $165,000.00 - $181,500.00 annually.
• New Jersey: $124,000.00 - $165,000.00 - $181,500.00 annually.
• Delaware: $124,000.00 - $165,000.00 - $181,500.00 annually.
• Washington, DC metropolitan area: $137,000.00 - $182,000.00 - $200,200.00 annually.
• California: $143,000.00 - $190,000.00 - $209,000.00 annually.
• All other states: Geographic cost of labor is used to develop market-driven ranges.
