Software Dev Engineer, AWS Billing

About the role

Build the full-stack experiences that help millions of AWS customers understand and optimize their cloud spending. You'll own the console surfaces and services behind AWS Cost Explorer, BCM Dashboards, and AWS Budgets — evolving them end-to-end from frontend React components to backend Java services to operational health. Design solutions for hard problems: making cost data intuitive at massive scale, building managed dashboard experiences, and migrating millions of customers to modernized console architectures. Work directly with product and UX to understand customer pain, propose approaches, and ship iteratively.

Responsibilities

• Design and build full-stack features across AWS Cost Explorer, BCM Dashboards, and AWS Budgets — React/TypeScript frontends and Java backend services serving millions of AWS customers
• Own features through the full software lifecycle: customer problem discovery, technical design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production operations
• Solve difficult problems at scale: cost data visualization, managed dashboard experiences, and console migration for millions of customers across multi-partition deployments
• Author technical design documents, lead design reviews, and provide meaningful code reviews that raise the team's code bar
• Drive operational excellence: own alarms, monitoring, runbooks, and on-call rotations for live production services; resolve root causes of systemic issues
• Mentor engineers, onboard new team members, and foster an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives shape technical decisions
• Collaborate with product management and UX to deeply understand customer pain points and translate them into incremental, shippable solutions
• Contribute to team technical strategy and roadmap — help decide where to invest, what to modernize, and what to deprecate
• Write clean, testable, production-ready code using AI-native development practices — leveraging GenAI tools as daily development partners

A day in the life

You start the morning reviewing a PR for a new budget threshold visualization, leaving feedback on the API contract and suggesting a simpler state management approach. After standup, you pair with a junior engineer on a CDK deployment issue across partitions. Mid-morning, you design backend service changes for a new managed dashboard feature, sketching the API and drafting a design doc to address edge cases like hundreds of linked accounts with different configurations.

After lunch, you investigate an alarm for elevated latency on a Cost Explorer API, identify an inefficient query pattern for a new customer segment, and document a runbook entry. Late afternoon, you brainstorm with the team about using AI to improve customer experience — prototyping how GenAI could help interpret cost trends, surface optimization recommendations, or simplify dashboard creation. You end the day pushing a React component behind a feature flag, making multi-account cost trends scannable at a glance.

Most days combine hands-on coding across the stack, mentoring, design thinking, operational awareness, and exploring how AI can improve both development and customer experience.

About the team

We own the console experiences millions of AWS customers use daily to understand and manage their cloud costs — Cost Explorer, BCM Dashboards, and AWS Budgets. We're actively modernizing these products while building net-new managed dashboard experiences and exploring how AI can fundamentally change how customers interact with cost data.

AI-assisted development is part of our daily workflow, and we're exploring how GenAI can surface insights, simplify complex data, and make cost management more conversational.

Requirements

• 2+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
• 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture experience (design patterns, reliability, and scaling of new and existing systems)
• Experience programming with at least one software programming language

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
• 2+ years of full software development life cycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations

Pay

USA, WA, Seattle - $143,700.00 - $194,400.00 USD annually. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
