About the College and Department

The College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences (CLASS) fosters intellectual development, ethical reasoning, and aesthetic sensibility through disciplines in the humanities, performing arts, and social sciences. The Department of Sociology consists of 17 tenured/tenure-track faculty covering two undergraduate majors: General Sociology and Criminology. The department also offers a Sociology degree with a specialty in Social Work, which is being developed into a CSWE-accredited BSW program with an anticipated launch in Fall 2027.

Faculty in the department provide students with broad perspectives on social institutions, social problems, and diverse communities through expertise in areas including racial and ethnic inequality, education, sport, politics, gender, disability, and policing and punishment. The department values equity, belonging, inclusion, and social justice.

About the Role

The Department of Sociology seeks a tenure-track faculty member to teach courses in social work, with a focus on micro-level social work. Candidates with antiracist and anti-oppressive perspectives are especially encouraged. The position requires excellence in teaching, advising, professional and scholarly achievements, and a commitment to service. Faculty are expected to teach the equivalent of four courses per semester, with junior faculty receiving one course release each semester for their first two years.

The successful candidate will play an essential role in developing the department’s BSW degree and the overall growth of the social work program. Candidates must demonstrate sensitivity to issues of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender, class, age, religion, disability, and sexuality.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Social Work, Sociology, or a related social sciences field from an accredited university (must be completed by the start of the appointment).
• Master’s in Social Work (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited university.
• University teaching experience as instructor of record and/or teaching assistant.

Preferred Qualifications

• Evidence of ability to teach courses across the Department’s curriculum.
• Evidence of teaching excellence through student evaluations, pedagogical innovation, or other indicators.
• Active scholarly agenda that includes opportunities for student research.
• Experience serving as an academic advisor and research mentor to a diverse undergraduate student body.
• Curriculum and/or program development experience.
• Two years of post-MSW practice experience.

Pay

Salary range: $86,864 - $90,864.
