About the role

The County of Napa is seeking a Librarian I to join the Young Adult area of the Library. This is a continuous recruitment and applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate pool is identified.

Responsibilities

• Provide general reference and reader's advisory services to the public
• Explain policies and procedures to patrons and staff
• Conduct outreach or on-site programs for various age groups
• Assist and advise patrons regarding the use of library materials and equipment
• Conduct reference searches using a variety of databases, on-line and other search techniques
• Participate in collection development including suggesting additional books, reference materials, audio and video tapes, electronic media and other library materials
• Evaluate material collections for current and potential user service needs
• Maintain accurate records and files for the purpose of tracking statistics associated with assigned unit
• Write proposals and grant requests for special library needs
• Act as supervisor or manager in their absence
• Prepare reports, information materials and other written materials for day-to-day work activities
• Direct work of paraprofessional and/or clerical support staff
• Represent the library in meetings with the community or special interest groups
• Plan and conduct programs for specific customer groups such as children, young adults or adults
• Conduct class visits and maintain relationships with local schools and other community groups
• Select and recommend books and other materials suitable for young patrons
• Provide general reference services for younger patrons including those related to school assignments
• Maintain young adult's portion of the library's web site
• Maintain appropriate library atmosphere as well as encourages young adult participation in the library activities

Requirements

To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities. A desirable combination is:

• Experience: None required
• Education: Possession of a graduate degree in library science issued by a college or university accredited by the American Library Association is required

Special Qualifications

• Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of professional practices, procedures and techniques of library science including general reference, acquisitions, circulation, adult, young adult and children's library work
• Technical classification and cataloging methods and procedures
• Books, periodicals, bibliographies and reference materials
• General library functions and organizations
• Reference sources and search techniques, including the use on on-line catalogs, databases and Internet sources
• Techniques for organizing library materials to meet patron needs
• Principles of collection development and materials selection
• Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds
• Skills to advise patrons on reference sources and methods
• Perform detailed reference searches using on-line, print and other methods
• Advise patrons and select books to meet reader's needs
• Represent the library system in the community and at professional meetings
• Maintain accurate records and files for day-to-day operations
• Prepare and clear and concise reports, educational materials and other written materials
• Plan children's, young adult or adult program
• Develop and promote special library services to meet current and prospective community needs
• Ability to communicate effectively with people of diverse socio-economic backgrounds, ages and temperaments
• Establish effective working relationships with those contact in the course of the work
• Initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines
• Organize work and set priorities
• Work evenings, weekends and at any branch as assigned
• Read printed materials and a computer screen clearly
• Hear and speak in order to converse in person and over the telephone

Education and Experience
