Responsibilities

• Supervision of juvenile law violators, adult law violators, defendants conditionally released from the Hawaii State Hospital, or juvenile status offenders.
• Conducting child custody/visitation evaluations.
• Assisting protection order petitioners.
• Assisting in child welfare services cases referred to the Family Court.
• Engaging with juveniles temporarily detained.
• Involving family and community in juvenile cases.
• Preparing case records and reports.

Qualifications

Education Requirement: Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a bachelor’s degree including a minimum of twelve (12) semester credit hours in social work, social welfare, criminal justice, human services, counseling, psychology, sociology, or other related social sciences. Equivalent work experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis, provided it demonstrates comparable knowledge and abilities, including the capacity to write clear reports, interpret complex material, and solve problems logically.

Requirements

• Specialized Experience: Progressively responsible professional social work experience involving assessments, treatment planning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and client progress evaluation.
• Driver's License: Current and valid driver's license required.
• PREA Compliance: Must not have engaged in or been convicted of sexual abuse, or have substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or harassment, especially in institutional settings.

Additional Information

Most positions serve as probation officers, managing caseloads of clients under court supervision. Probation officers engage in collaborative casework with clients facing mental health issues, family conflict, law violations, behavioral problems, substance abuse, and more. Applicants using education as a substitution for experience must submit transcripts or diplomas. Graduates may apply within three months prior to graduation but must provide official transcripts upon degree completion.
