Social Worker
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Provide social emotional and mental health support to K-8 students at three schools in the City Heights community.
FUNCTION OF THE UNIT
In collaboration with San Diego State University, San Diego Unified School District and Price Philanthropies, and under the direction of the assigned principal investigator for the Lead and Learn from the Heart program, this school social work position strives to meet the educational and mental health needs of K-8 students and their families.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the City Heights community and social services resources
- Knowledge of the San Diego area public school system
- Knowledge and ability to support children at different developmental levels and abilities
PROVIDE COUNSELING/THERAPY
- Assess students for mental health issues and complete intake process with students/families
- Provide individual, group, and family counseling
- Make referrals to resources and case management
- Develop crisis intervention plans
- Facilitate support groups on topics such as self-esteem groups, social skills, anger management, and prevention and awareness activities
- Provide SEL presentations and activities to the entire school
- Offer classroom presentations on prevention-related topics
PLANNING/SUPERVISION
- Create a welcoming and joining climate for all multi-ethnic and linguistic parents
- Serve as a field instructor with SDSU’s School of Social Work
- Collaborate with the SEL program to coordinate support services for students
- Collaborate with existing school programs and other agencies to coordinate support services for students
- Collaborate with other school staff to coordinate support services for students
- Attend monthly social work meetings
DOCUMENTATION
- Maintain quality and timeliness of program documentation
- Provide input to program management on programmatic matters
- Absorb responsibility for data collection, evaluation, and measurement of outcomes of social work programs
COMMUNICATION
- Advocate for students in meetings such as the Problem Solving Team, Attendance Action team, and other multidisciplinary teams
- Coordinate community agency resources on school
- Aid parents in accessing and sustaining community resources and services
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Master's Degree, preferably in social work
- 3 or more years of professional social work experience
- Registered or registration eligible with California's Board of Behavioral Sciences as ACSW or ACSW in progress
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL SKILLS
- Bilingual in Spanish, Vietnamese, or Haitian/Creole
- Hold Valid PPS Credential in School Social Work with the added authorization in Child Welfare and Attendance

Candidate must reside in California and live within a commutable distance from SDSU at time of hire. Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on background check results (including a criminal record check).
