Social Services Internships

About the role

The Department of Social Services is seeking temporary, unpaid interns. Interns must work a minimum of 6 hours per week and a maximum of 24 hours per week, Monday through Friday during standard business hours. The internship extends academic instruction, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge to practical workplace assignments and projects.

Responsibilities

• Back to School Internship: assist with the Back to School Program that provides backpacks and school supplies to over 4,500 low‑income elementary students; learn how the program fits the department’s mission; interact with community donors; understand family needs for school necessities; participate in community events and media activities; deliver backpacks and supplies to elementary schools; if the internship extends beyond summer, gain exposure to other projects in the Community Initiatives & Programs Division.
• Volunteer Program Internship: learn project management by working on initiatives; assist with developing and writing volunteer newsletters; conduct research and interviews for newsletter articles; design and layout newsletters; recommend newsletter content; solicit volunteers in the community.
• Holiday Sharing Program: help match donors to seniors/families needing Thanksgiving and Christmas assistance; enter families’ wish lists and answer/make phone calls at the Annapolis location from October through December.

Schedule

Interns must work Monday‑Friday during standard business hours, with a minimum of 6 hours and a maximum of 24 hours per week.

Qualifications

• Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a related field (e.g., Human Services, Public Relations, Marketing, Social Work).
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
• Submit an official or unofficial transcript to verify enrollment status and GPA.

Skills

• Preferred experience/courses: Introduction to Computers.
• Desired experience with Microsoft and/or Google applications.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
