Soccer - Assistant Coach JV - Girls - High School

About the Role

High school assistant coaches work in concert with the head coach to ensure the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole child development, including expectations for academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships. Per WIAA requirements, you must be at least 19 years of age to apply for any assistant coaching positions.

Responsibilities

• Keep abreast of knowledge and techniques associated with the sport by staying current with sport-specific literature and attending clinics and workshops.
• Study, understand, and enforce the rules and regulations of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), Federal Way Public Schools, and the league in which the team competes.
• Promote the sport within the school and community, and report scores and contest-related information to designated media and the league website immediately following each contest.
• Attend practices and contests on a daily basis; absences should be rare and cleared in advance with the building athletic director.
• Implement a system of play and/or style of instruction as directed by the head coach.
• Model safety training and have a working knowledge of basic athletic training skills, including taping and first aid functions.
• Exercise good judgment, project positive coaching behaviors, and teach fundamental skills, leadership, and teamwork.
• Serve as an example of sportsmanship, humility, and ethical behavior at all times.
• Supervise participants from the time they report until they leave, and reinforce eligibility requirements and participation rules.
• Ensure team members have completed the eligibility process before allowing participation in any practice activity.
• Respond to injuries by calling 911 for serious cases and submitting an Accident Report Form within 24 hours.
• Report scores promptly and accurately to local news media and the league website following events.
• Attend building, district, league, and rules clinic meetings as scheduled.
• Work with the head coach to plan and implement a post-season gathering for participants and parents/guardians.
• Report safety concerns related to facilities and equipment to the head coach and assume responsibility for their care.
• Report violations and/or ejections to the head coach, building athletic director, and director of athletics immediately following the contest.
• Attend an evaluation meeting with the building athletic director following the season.
• Meet regularly with the head coach to discuss program goals and ensure consistent implementation of skills, systems, and strategies.
• Account for all program-related equipment and supplies checked out at the start of the season.
• Request essential program needs through the head coach and avoid purchasing program items with personal funds.
• Work through the head coach to discuss and obtain approval for fundraising activities.
• Perform other related duties as assigned to support student learning objectives.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Prior sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary and/or post-secondary athletics program and/or related club coaching experience.
• Proven training and experience in the presentation of drills, safety factors, and proper application of skills.
• 19 years of age or older, per WIAA regulations.
• Criminal background clearance.
• First Aid and CPR certification (must be hands-on training).
• Online Concussion Training (CT) certification (available at www.nfhslearn.com).

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years of paid high school and/or post-secondary sport-specific coaching experience and/or related club coaching experience.
• Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course, including passing the test.

Skills

• Knowledge of league and WIAA rules and regulations, as well as National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) sport-specific rules.
• Ability to organize, administrate, and oversee a sport-specific athletics program at each level.
• Ability to comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to perform job responsibilities independently with attention to detail.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk.
• Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
• Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
• Work environment includes indoor conditions and surfaces that vary in height and stability; noise levels may range from moderate to loud.
