SMP Technical Writer/Editor
BAE Systems is seeking a Technical Writer/Editor to contribute to the Documentation Enterprise team supporting Strategic Systems Programs (SSP). This role involves producing and editing technical documents and procedure manuals, including Strategic Systems Program Ordnance Pamphlets, Corrective Maintenance Procedures, and related documentation such as governing documents, correspondence, technical specifications, and work instructions.
About the role
The Technical Editor will work closely with Subject Matter Experts, Technologists, and other Technical Editors to create and edit technical data, ensuring accuracy and adherence to Department of Navy standards. Responsibilities include performing quality checks on externally submitted data, maintaining data integrity, coordinating document production and distribution schedules, and proofreading material for content structure, format, spelling, and punctuation. The role also involves deciphering redlines on technical procedures and drawings, recommending process improvements, and contributing to related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Edit and produce technical documents and manuals, including Strategic Systems Program Ordnance Pamphlets, Ordnance Documents, and Corrective Maintenance Procedures.
- Ensure accuracy, integrity, and compliance with Navy-approved DTDs for structured electronic manuals in XML.
- Perform quality checks on externally submitted data and maintain document configuration control.
- Coordinate document production and distribution schedules, including timely distribution of replacement documents.
- Proofread and edit documents for content, structure, format, spelling, punctuation, and adherence to DoD correspondence manuals and MIL-Standards.
- Decipher redlines (changes) on technical procedures and drawings made by contractor partners or team members.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure accuracy and completeness of technical data, recommending changes to internal processes as needed.
- Communicate effectively with all staff levels and across program areas to produce high-quality documentation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or Computer Science, preferred, with at least 4 years of related/relevant work experience or equivalent education and experience.
- Exceptional attention to detail and an eye for formatting inconsistencies.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with outstanding proofreading and formatting abilities.
- Familiarity with producing structured electronic manuals in XML in compliance with Navy-approved DTDs.
- Ability to edit professional documents for content, sentence tense continuity, and adherence to DoD correspondence manuals and MIL-Standards.
- Experience performing documentation coordination and production activities within tight deadlines, focusing on accuracy and content integrity.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate across all program areas.
- Flexibility in dealing with changing priorities and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to quickly grasp complex technical concepts and make them easily understandable in text and visuals.
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
Preferred Skills
- Essential knowledge and experience in proofreading/editing, including advanced grammar skills.
- Knowledge or experience with Continuous Process Improvement.
- Ability to apply knowledge of cybersecurity concepts, policies, and procedures.
- Familiarity with Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), including requirements, portion markings, and creation.
- Experience with documentation/word processing systems (e.g., Microsoft, Arbortext, Vulcan, Quicksilver).
- Experience creating and updating U.S. Navy instructions, manuals, notices, or change transmittals.
- Experience creating or manipulating graphic files.

Pay
Full-Time Salary Range: $82,779 - $140,723. Individual salaries are determined by factors including business considerations, local market conditions, internal equity, and candidate qualifications such as skills, education, and experience.
