About the Scholarship

The SmithGroup Design a Better Future Scholarship supports and mentors students in architecture, interior design, urban planning, landscape architecture, and engineering (civil/structural, mechanical, electrical, and fire protection). The program's mission is to help these students attain their professional goals while advancing the architecture/engineering/construction (AEC) industry and improving the built environment. SmithGroup fosters an inclusive design process where teams comprised of individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives develop thoughtful design solutions to address complex real-world problems. The scholarship is intended to support the next generation of talent by providing academic support and the opportunity to gain professional experience in the design industry. Students who demonstrate a strong commitment to fostering inclusion within their university, community, and/or AEC industry are encouraged to apply.

Award Details

• One-time award of $6,000 to offset tuition at the recipient's current academic institution (5 scholarships awarded each year)
• Paid summer internship at a SmithGroup office in the United States

Eligibility

• Current undergraduate (at least junior-level standing) or graduate student in an accredited architecture, interior design, urban planning, landscape architecture, or engineering program in the United States
• Enrolled student during the Fall 2027 semester (scholarships are paid directly to the academic institution)
• Available for a paid summer internship
• Current GPA of 3.0 or better
• Legally authorized to work in the U.S.

Internship Details

• 12-week summer internships held between May and August
• Hybrid work options providing flexibility to work within SmithGroup's vibrant office culture
• Anticipated hourly rate: $19.00 to $28.00 per hour (at time of posting)
• Eligible for overtime pay for hours worked beyond 40 in a work week
