Position Summary

Leads small group training classes using proper exercise techniques and motivation.

Essential Functions

  • Promotes and incorporates the YMCA five core values into all activities.
  • Plans and develops fitness programs to implement during small group training classes.
  • Observes and discusses individual progress with participants.
  • Develops rapport with members and responds to questions related to fitness.
  • Offers alternatives during class to accommodate different fitness levels.
  • Maintains a safe workout environment by monitoring participants and responding to and reporting accidents and incidents.
  • Prepares room and equipment prior to class and properly secures room/area and equipment following the class; reports equipment and/or facility problems to supervisor promptly.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of National Personal Training certification (see list below) or Primary Group Fitness Certification (ACE, AFAA, NASM).
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention trainings.
  • Previous experience working as a Personal Trainer, Group Exercise Instructor or Small Group Training Instructor is preferred.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations.

  • American College of Sports Medicine ACSM Health and Fitness Instructor
  • National Academy of Sports Medicine NASM Certified Personal Trainer (NASM-PES or OPT)
  • The Cooper Institute Cooper Certified Personal Trainer
  • National Strength and Conditioning Association NSCA Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT)
  • American Council on Exercise ACE Certified Personal Trainer
  • Aerobics and Fitness Association of America AFAA Certified Personal Trainer
  • Professional Fitness Instructor Training (PFIT)
  • Certified Personal Trainer Instructor (CPFT)
  • National Exercise Trainers Association NETA Certified Personal Training

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and taste or smell.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
