About the role

A Sleep Technologist/RPSGT works under general supervision to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in-center and out-of-center sleep testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, patient care, and direct patient education.

Schedule

Full-time position with hours generally from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am, varying based on patient volume. Additional incentive pay per shift is available based on attended study and scoring productivity.

Responsibilities

  • Gather, analyze, and integrate patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs, including physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status, and pertinent medical/social history.
  • Determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.
  • Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing, ensuring proper functioning and making adjustments as necessary.
  • Verify patient video recording(s) is operating properly per laboratory standard protocol.
  • Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards and perform appropriate physiologic calibrations.
  • Perform positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.
  • Follow procedural protocols for tests such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP, and oxygen titration.
  • Establish and document baseline values (e.g., body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates) during "lights out" procedures.
  • Perform polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure artifact-free signals and make adjustments as needed.
  • Document observations every 20 minutes, including sleep stage, clinical events, position changes, pressure changes, SaO2 values, heart rate, respiratory rate, and significant events.
  • Implement appropriate interventions for patient safety and therapeutic needs, such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure and oxygen administration.
  • Follow "lights on" procedures to verify data integrity and complete the data collection process.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide age-specific care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Oversee and perform difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.
  • Score sleep/wake stages and clinical events (e.g., respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals) according to professionally accepted guidelines and center-specific protocols.
  • Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
  • Comply with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control.
  • Perform routine and complex equipment care and maintenance, and evaluate sleep study-related equipment and inventory.
  • Maintain current CPR or BCLS certification.
  • Demonstrate effective written and spoken communication skills, appropriate social skills, and the ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy.
  • Respond to study participants' procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information.
  • Ensure continuity of patient care during shifts, documenting exchanges of care in accordance with Pivotal Health's Continuum of Care policy.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform the duties defined for a sleep technician and progress to a sleep technologist role.
  • Compliance with the ABSM Standards of Conduct.
  • Dress code: Well-fitting scrubs or business casual with a lab coat.
