Slasher Operator

About the Role

This position operates machinery to saturate warp yarn with size and wind it onto loom beams, ensuring the correct materials and processes are used for each warp production.

Responsibilities

• Check the schedule and/or pattern sheet to verify raw materials are available for the next warp.
• Add ID Thread to the slashing process.
• Operate the machine to saturate warp yarn with size and wind sized yarn onto the loom beam.
• Position section beams onto the creel with the aid of another worker, using a hoist.
• Ensure the correct style is on the creel and that section beams are loaded.
• Verify the correct number of section beams are hung in the creel by counting as required by the style pattern.
• Obtain and complete the Slasher Check Sheet for every warp produced, signed by the slasher operator and size prep.
• Ensure creel tension is set correctly.
• Gather warp ends and tie them to corresponding leaders or thread yarn through the size box, drying cylinders, and onto loom beams.
• Insert lease rods between alternate strands of yarn to prevent sticking.
• Lay individual warp ends between teeth of the expansion comb for even distribution across the loom beam.
• Set beam heads to the specified width.
• Turn valves to admit size into the vat and steam into drying cylinders.
• Set the yardage clock to indicate the yardage to be wound on the loom beam.
• Start the machine and monitor the warp flow to detect breaks and tangles.
• Beam the warp, attach correct doff sheets and warp tickets, and tape ID and tie threads to the warp.
• Disentangle yarn and tie broken ends.
• Record stops in Porini using a three-digit stop code.
• Verify adherence of size to yarn and ensure yarn is dry but not burned.
• Insert lease string in warp yarn and secure yarn ends with tape.
• Doff loom beam onto warp truck and replace with an empty beam using a hoist.
• Transport completed warp to the leasing machine.
• Change the temperature control chart on the control panel as required.
• Complete the hoist checklist to ensure proper function and safety.
• Perform housekeeping duties in assigned areas.
• Troubleshoot problems and notify supervisors or maintenance of equipment malfunctions.
• Follow all safety rules to ensure personal and team safety.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, GED, or High School Equivalency Certificate preferred.
• Ability to operate a warp pan truck and forklift; certification will be required.

Work Environment

This job operates in a manufacturing environment with frequent exposure to noise, dust, various chemicals, and moving parts. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel toe shoes.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to talk, walk, stand for extended periods, and hear.
• Good hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity.
• Reach overhead and outward with hands and arms, perform repetitive hand actions (grasping, push/pull, fine manipulations).
• Bend, stoop, kneel, lift up to 50 lbs, and push/pull weights up to 600 lbs using beam hoists.
• Climb up and down steps and ladders.
• Specific vision abilities required: color vision, close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.

Schedule

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work will be determined by shift. Weekend and overtime work may be required as job duties demand.
